Default Replace 120 GB Barracuda ST3120026A

Forget eveything, I am throwing in the towel. I am going to go around to
the thrift stores Wednesday and see if I can not find an old computer that
is running WinXP. Maybe I can even find one that has hardware as new as
2005 or 2006 instead of my current hardware built in 2000. Then I will use
a current backup to replace everything. I should not have any problem
finding any drivers I might need.

Running WinXP Pro on an old computer with Barracuda's in Raid 1 that are
11 years old. I can hear the start of a bearing problem in one of them.
So I have to replace them. I have found the current drives on Amazon for
$22. Could a replace these drives with a larger size and how big could I
go?

Good. I really like to keep old h/w going as long as possible but no
longer consider re-using anything less than a P-4 2 ghz with 2 gigs of RAM

I am now starting to get discarded dual core and even quad core machines.

Default Replace 120 GB Barracuda ST3120026A

I am only looking to upgrade the hard drives to around 200 gigs each. The
computer is a Micron 800 Mhz Pentium 3 that was purchased in March of 2000.
It is only kept for one specific task and is not even connected to the
network or internet. It appears to have a Tyan S1854 motherboard so now I
am trying to figure out what the 6 32bit PCI Master Bus slots are. They do
have a notch but I am not sure what PCI version so I can make sure if I buy
a new raid adapter the card it will fit and work. I still have not opened
the computer and I believe the last time I was in it was back in 2005.

So my answer is really off in the "wrong era".

You can convert an IDE system, to use SATA drives.

Apparently they're still selling these - I have one
of these here. This is how I connect a SATA drive to
the IDE port on my current computer. My IDE port
is "special" in that I can do Host Protected Area commands
on that IDE port.

That will at least allow you to shop for SATA drives.

*******

A machine that old, may not recognize a SATA card. That
was a problem with some year 2000 machines.

You need 48 bit LBA support to use IDE drives over 137GB.
The 120GB drive is the largest drive that fits under that
limit. Perhaps your selection was on purpose.

And your controller is SIL0680, which is a CMD0680
made by Silicon Image. The manual for this SIL0680 card,
says it has 48 bit LBA, so you can use a larger drive.

You might well have good enough materials to do some
upgrading. You're not limited to IDE drives, as
long as you can get adapters. The adapter requires
power, so you'll need a daisy chain power cable.
Check the "box contents" on whatever adapter you use,
as sometimes the Startech ones include the required cable.
The Startech web site usually offers PDF docs and so on,
to help figure out what you're getting.

Dx.com has these, as well as many other items, for a much lower cost.

As with most of their gear, standard shipping will take about three weeks.
