Are "remanufactured" toner cartridges any good?
I need to replace a toner cartridge for my Brother HL-1440. I can get a
genuine Brother high-capacity toner cartidge for under $60. I also see that "remanufactured" toner cartridges are maybe 20% cheaper (when shipping is factored in.) Are they any good, though? And what does "remanufactured" mean, anyway? I also see toner refill kits are even cheaper. They sound messy, though, and my pages are coming out a little gray now, so I'm thinking of avoiding that. Also, what do I do with the old toner cartridge once I've replaced it? Can they get recycled? I'd rather it not end up in a landfill if I can avoid it. |

Some are terrible. I had a one from Nu-Kote that was defective, and Nu-Kote immediately sent me a fresh replacement with no questions asked after calling their 1-(800) service number. Someone here claimed that the ones branded by "Big Box" office supply stores were among the least reliable, but my limited experience with such sources doesn't support that claim. The "Big Box" would probably also have easy return policies as well, but that is inconvenient. I can buy local Remanufactured cartridges, but the local firm merely resells refills from a third party. And they have all been good. And he delivers free. Jim -- ................................ Keepsake gift for young girls. Unique and personal one-of-a-kind. Builds strong minds 12 ways. It depends on how well they are remanufactured.
Some companies replace all consumable or worn parts (Toner/developer (as needed) wiper, seals, etc., drum as needed (sometimes refinished with new photosensitive material). These are usually almost as good as a new one. Some companies consider opening up the toner area and filling it with toner and if you are lucky, they empty the waste toner section, enough to justify calling it "remanufactured." Caveat Emptor.
