Default duplicated devices in Gateway G6-266

Should I just admit defeat and junk this thing?

Why is the single disk drive appearing twice,
once as an IDE drive and also once as a SCSI drive?

After re-installation of Windows 98SE on a Gateway G6-266
and after downloading the proper device drivers as per
http://support.gateway.com

* * * The hard disk is appearing twice in the device list * * *

While installing Win98, the machine insisted that
the ZIP cartridge drive would be drive C
and the fixed disk would be drive D
and the cd-rom would be drive E.

I tried disabling the ZIP drive either in BIOS or by
simply unplugging it, but either way it was disabled,
it had the side-effect of also disabling the cd-rom.

So I kept the ZIP drive enable as drive (C
and I installed Win98 on fixed disk (D.

Fixed Drive (D) isn't bootable when the ZIP disk is
enabled, so ZIP disk (C) is now the Win98 boot disk,
but (C) is otherwise unused, cause it's small and slow
(and noisy!).

Then came the bad part. I installed the ULTRA33 device
driver, and now the fixed disk appears twice in the device
list, once as an IDE disk and once as a SCSI disk,
even though it's just one fixed disk.

So now (C is still the ZIP disk,
but the fixed disk is both (D and (E
and, also, the drive is in "MS-DOS compatibility mode"
which makes some software fail.

Here's the printout from the Win98 device manager.

Clear the CMOS (nvram) - there'll be a reset configuration option in BIOS
setup, or use the jumper on the board.
