hp deskjet 610c woes

hi all,

here's the situation. i've built a new computer for my parents to
replace their old HP Pavilion. This new computer has XP Pro, which
was updated from NT 4.0. The Pavilion came with the deskjet 610c.
When I tried installing those drivers on the new computer, I got the
message that those drivers cannot be used by XP, and that XP should
already have the drivers included somewhere.

So I went to the add hardware wizard and let it search for those
drivers. I got a message back saying a file was found (I think it was
c:\winnt\winprint.inf, i'd have to look at it again) and asked if I
wanted to install it. I clicked yes, then I got a message saying an
error occurred during the driver installation because the file
specified could not be found.

So I went to the HP site to see what they had to say and they have
that tutorial for manually selecting your printer. I tried that, and
got another error message, this time simply saying it could not add
the printer.

I guess I should also add that when I plug the printer cable in the
back, the add hardware wizard pops up and tells me that it has
detected an HP DeskJet 610c.

So, is there something maybe i haven't tried yet that might work, or
is there a known issue that I haven't come across, or what's going on?
