Default Best all round new printer?

I'm looking for a new printer. What's the best all rounder in terms of
photo quality, ink economy, print speed etc. Not too hung up on price,
though less than $300 US fits my budget.
thanks
Andy

Boy, I sure like my Canon i950. It is an amazing photo printer, works with
some of the best paper on the planet, and ooh how I love changing cartridges
in it - so easy. It has six separate ink tanks, they snap in and out like
nothing, and the software tells you precisely when they run out (and when
they are getting low). The printer is great on text, but I have an older,
cheaper printer for text that won't use my photo inks up.

Oh, and there is software that is part of the printer that improves your
prints! One function improves the dynamic range, so that the blacks are
black and the whites are white. This is one of the factors that give snap to
an image. Another improves color, increasing saturation slightly in the
blues and greens, for richer landscapes. There is even one for noise
reduction, tho I haven't had a need for that yet.

Did I mention the borderless printing at ANY size up to 8.5 x 11?

I'm very pleased with my Canon i950.

I recently needed to print a bunch of 4 by 6's. Historically, I'd print two
each on an 8.5 by 11 piece of paper and trim. On my Epson 870, I'd fight
with (and get frustrated with) the Epson roll paper situation.

With the Canon i950, it was very easy to print gorgeous 4 by 6's directly.
I'm using Red River "polar satin" papers. Wonderful stuff.

Printing is quick and amazingly quiet. (It even has a setting to be even
quieter during different times of the day.) 6 ink carts that you can replace
individually. Photo magenta and photo cyan will be used up very quickly
followed by yellow. I've not refilled but others say the process is easy.
I'm trying some compatible inks.

I have an i950 also, but you should look at the Epson 960 also if you can
find it in your price range.

The i950 doesn't directly hook to cameras, if that's important to you.
