Default Can't Get Rid of Adobe Reader

A friend of mine has a new Dell E510 with Windows Media Center. He
uses FireFox and installed a plug-in for pdf files. He ran into all
kinds of problems with trying to read pdf files. He attempted to
install Adobe Reader 7.0, but couldn't because 6.0.1 showed in the
add/remove programs list. However, it would not let him remove 6.0.1
without installing some CD that he doesn't have. Anyone had an idea
how to get out of this? He has already tried the manual remove
procedure from the Adobe site which gave him an error message stating
that there is another instance of 7.0 on the computer. He did find
three references to 7.0 in the registry.

System restore back to a date before the 7.0 install.

This has been going on since he got the computer. To do that, he
would have to go back to the original configuration as it came from
Dell. Probably not a good option.

Well if you don't mind getting your hands dirty:
1. Start - Run - Regedit [ok]
2. Backup the whole registry
3. Search for every instance of Adobe, Acrobat, PDF and delete them
4. Open explorer and move every instance of Adobe related programs to a
backup directory
5. Cross your fingers and try to reinstall Acrobat

or

Use a better PDF client, I like ghostscript which is Free Software and
also works with PostScript files (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/).
Acrobat is really poorly designed in my opinion, it's a shame that you
can't (well not easily) run kpdf in Windows.

However, you can run Foxit Reader (free)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/
You may be able to ignore the installed versions of Adobe because Foxit
will ask to become the program associated with PDFs.
