Default nVidia 7600GS and ASUS P4P800dlx MoBos.

I have an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe Mobo; 420wPSU; XP 32bit ed. I recently
wanted to upgrade my video card to a nVidia 7600 AGP 512 -- In the
ASUS User's manual it said to not use 3.3 v cards only 1.5 v cards and
the nvdia website says

"The Geforce family and Quadro family based cards can operate at AGP
1.5 volts. Some of the older Geforce and Quadro cards follow the AGP
2.0 spec (AGP 4x and AGP 2x) meaning they will operate at 1.5 volts or
3.3 volts. The newer video cards follow the AGP 3.0 spec (AGP 8x and
AGP 4x) meaning they will operate universal at 1.5 volts and .8 volts.
This operation is negotiated automatically and is not a user defined
option."

It would seem that the card should work - but I got a blank screen
when it was installed. Put the FX5200 back in and no problem. Did I
misunderstand the capabilities of my MoBo? PNY wrote me back and said
that it should work so did I just do something wrong with my install?

There are only two I/O supply voltages, but three I/O signal levels.

The AGP slot has two slots cut in it - one indicates 3.3V compatibility
and the other is for 1.5V. Your motherboard has a 1.5V plastic key
inserted in the AGP slot, and if a video card does not have the
matching slot cut in it, the card will not physically fit in the slot.
Both your FX5200 and the bridged 7600 should be keyed for at least
1.5V.

The signal amplitude levels on the AGP data bus are 3.3V, 1.5V, and
0.8V. Your P4P800 motherboard supports AGP 3.0 spec, and can handle
a card that wished to signal at 0.8V on the data bus. This is the
AGP30 spec, if you are curious (1MB).

With regard to the automatic negotiation, there are three signals
on the bus that handle the negotiation. GC_DET#, MB_DET#, and TYPEDET#.
The first two communicate either way between motherboard and video
card, to indicate capabilities. The third is sent from the video card
to the motherboard, and logic zero says "I prefer 1.5V please" for
the I/O supply voltage. (Table 17 page 41 of the spec above.) Not
all combinations in the table exist in practice. And that little
detail is summarized here - there is a "reduced" table of combinations,
that characterizes what is available at retail:

So, all of the above is probably irrelevant :-) And only included
if you are curious.

There is a 7600GS AGP 512MB pictured he

Note there is a power connector in the upper right hand corner. It
is a Molex 1x4 disk drive connector. Have you plugged a power connector
to your card ? That is one reason it could be black.
