Default HP deskjet 940c: no longer prints text

No longer prints text from:
Microsoft Works 7.0
Wordpad
Notepad
Text on web pages

In addition: "Align Print Cartridges" skips line three (3) of the four.

The cartridge (#15) was replaced saturday and has 70% remaining.

I have done all three (3) cleanings with the hp software and . . soaked the
head in distilled water about 40 seconds.

I also removed, through 'control panel-add/remove', the printer driver and
re-downloaded: 940-enu-win9x.exe
then reinstalled the driver.

It does print the word 'Invent" in black which follows HP on the sample
sheet. Other than that it will not print one character in . . BLACK TEXT.
