3D/Open GL screen savers get choppy/pauses overnight?
Hi.
Does anyone know why my 3D/OpenGL screen savers (e.g., ATI Tubes) get choppy/pauses (almost frozen) overnight (4+ hours or so)? I disabled power management and the problem still occurs. I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AIW (128 MB) and Catalyst driver v5.1 in Windows XP Professional SP2 (all updates). Thank you in advance. -- "As a thinker and planner, the ant is the equal of any savage race of men; as a self-educated specialist in several arts she is the superior of any savage race of men; and in one or two high mental qualities she is above the reach of any man..." --Mark Twain /\___/\ / /\ /\ \ Ant @ The Ant Farm: http://antfarm.ma.cx | |o o| | Ant's Quality Foraged Links: http://aqfl.net \ _ / Please remove ANT if replying by e-mail. A scheduled disk defrag? Can't say that I've noticed it myself. I just noticed my CMOS had its power management enabled. I turned it off and let's see if it happens again later. I don't use scheduled tasks. I like to run stuff manually. Isn't Tubes DirectX? I think it is. I don't know. I downloaded it from ati.com. I don't use scheduled tasks. I like to run stuff manually. Isn't Tubes DirectX? I think it is. I don't know. I downloaded it from ati.com. Follow-up... It doesn't seem related to power management at all. I disabled it in CMOS and Windows. I did notice my CPU temperature was 138 degrees(F) [down to 129 degrees after a few minutes when typing this post] with 102 degrees(F) for motherboard temperature. The room's temperature was about 73 degress(F). I only had the screen saver running for about 2.5 hours. The video card has an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer (r2) [fixed my DOOM 3 dots problems]. It doesn't seem to be a heating issue. Is it? When the screen saver was choppy, I shook the mouse and it took like 30 seconds to bring up my Windows log on screen (password protected) to appear. HDD wasn't trashing or anything during the wait. Rerunning the screen saver after a few minutes showed normal speed. Oh and I upgraded the CATALYST driver to v5.2 yesterday, but that doesn't help. Any ideas? Thank you in advance. -- "As a thinker and planner, the ant is the equal of any savage race of men; as a self-educated specialist in several arts she is the superior of any savage race of men; and in one or two high mental qualities she is above the reach of any man..." --Mark Twain /\___/\ / /\ /\ \ Ant @ The Ant Farm: http://antfarm.ma.cx | |o o| | Ant's Quality Foraged Links: http://aqfl.net \ _ / Please remove ANT if replying by e-mail. You have way too much time on your hands.
Loop Quake3 Torture1 for 4 hours and see what happens. ATiTubes could just be coded like ****. A screensaver only activates when you are NOT using the computer. What's the point of using a fancy 3D screensaver? -- "War is the continuation of politics by other means. ... Nah, just stumped on why my computer is having issues. As another poster suggested, disable all the stupid indexing and auto-restore functions in WinXP. Does HL2 and DOOM 3 have a loop one? Don't know about HL2. Doom 3 should have a looping console command. Google for it. -- "War is the continuation of politics by other means. See http://www.blackviper.com/index.html for more information. Yeah, already done those. Loop Quake3 Torture1 for 4 hours and see what happens. ATiTubes could just be coded like ****. One problem. I don't have Q3A. Does HL2 and DOOM 3 have a loop one? Don't know about HL2. Doom 3 should have a looping console command. Google for it. I cannot seem to find that command. Where is it online? Maybe I am using bad keywords: doom 3 loop demo command. -- "I look at an ant and I see myself: a native South African, endowed by nature with a strength much greater than my size so I might cope with the weight of a racism that crushes my spirit." --Miriam Makeba /\___/\ / /\ /\ \ Ant @ The Ant Farm: http://antfarm.ma.cx | |o o| | Ant's Quality Foraged Links: http://aqfl.net \ _ / Please remove ANT if replying by e-mail.
