Cool`n' Quiet function, Please help!, It is not working when running on battery!
Hi,
I am having a problem with the Cool`n'Quiet function on this CPU! It is not working when the laptop is running on battery but it works fine when running on AC! On battery, the processor speed is always stuck on 1000 MHz according to PowerNow! Dashboard Demo no matter what power scheme I am using, home, portable, always on! On Ac it does function, when I am using the always on scheme, the speed is always 2000 MHz and on portable the speed cycles between 1000 and 2000 MHZ as it should! Is this by design, is the speed supposed to stay on 1000MHz on battery? I hope not and I hope that you can help me fix it! There is no way for me to play my game on battery, it is not fast enough! I called HP support twice about it and they are clueless, they have no idea what the [content edited] I am talking about. They finally said that it is working as it should but I don't think so! I bought a 2 GHz laptop and I'd like to use the 2 GHz even on battery! I downloaded the new driver, ruamdcpu.exe, it uninstalls my current driver which is 1.2.2.0 then after reboot it uses windows driver and I had to run the .exe again to install the new driver properly but the problem is it still shows 1.2.2.0 under hardware profile! I guess there isn't a 1.2.2.2 but on AMD web site it states there is a new 1.2.2.2 driver! Please advise and TIA. Make sure that Cool n' Quiet is enabled in your BIOS. Bobby |

Most laptop manufacturers lock the processor at it's lowest speed when on battery to conserve battery life. You used to be able to install the Win2k PowerNow! (PowerNow! is the name used for cool 'n' quiet on mobile processors) drivers in compatibility mode and make the CPU throttle when on battery. That trick stopped working when done post-SP2 install. There is a simple, free utility out ther eyou can se to fix the "problem" though. Download RMClock and install it. It actually throttles much better than the default throttling in XP anyway. It has many more steps, including half multipliers if you enable it, and the threshold of throttle can be changed. |

I did try all the power schemes, the switching works fine when running on AC but it gets stuck at half speed once switched to battery no matter what! |

Funny you mentioned that, I got this utility today off the AMD web site! Someone posted the link for it in the support forums. Surprisingly, it still works; you just have to change the compatibility of the .exe file. I just installed it and it added the PowerNow tab to WinXP power management. That actually did the trick, once I enabled "dynamic switching" for battery it stated throttling up and down accordingly. I chickened out though and uninstalled it because I was afraid that it would damage my hardware! I was not sure if PowerNow technology is compatible with the new cool 'n' quiet? But if you say it is the same thing then I might just reinstall it and stick with it, seems to do what I want done! I have a question about the RMClock thing, is this safe to use? I am not really comfortable messing with the CPU like you guys! Am I going to damage something if I use the wrong multiplier or voltage and something else? Again, thanks. |
