Jumping out of the frying pan into the fire ? Or is this the ultimate
air gap ?

"error 0x800f0845 -- means that it is not possible to perform a
rollback"

Many users are too lazy to schedule regular image backups of their OS
partition (and that includes the MBR/UEFI sector) and also to create a
system backup right before committing digital surgery on their OS.
After they phuck up their system, mention backups and they look like
deer caught in headlights.

Typical users do not qualify as sysadmins, not even as newbie sysadmins.
They don't plan. They deliberately choose to remain ignorant. No, you
don't need to be a master mechanic to drive a car but you should be one
to replace the intake manifold gasket. For an OS, you have lots of
drivers that think they are mechanics.

If you don't do backups then you consider your system and data as
unimportant, disposable, or reproducible. Most users are like children
with loaded handguns: let's see what happens AFTER pulling the trigger.

The tools that Cameo used to fix this we

"I was able to use the original Win7 install DVD in Repair Mode that
gave my DOS command window where I entered:

DISM /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Because the corrupt package was not installed com completely
I was able to use this shorter DISM command instead of the longer

DISM /image:c:\ /remove-package /packagename: etc. command.

After the restart my Win7 booted up normally and the update history
shows that KB4056894 installation failed:
"

So that's the usage of DISM in offline mode. The /image parameter
indicates which OS you want to apply the operation to.

Doing it offline, is what you do when the OS itself won't
boot any more.

Virtually anything that computes must now confront the spectre of a
meltdown. Don't trust a smartphone, even reconsider your abacus.
You're hopeless now;- it's the worst thing that could have happened.
High probability holds Intel is to blame, if conditionally provided a
significant slowdown, unless of course a drastic ruse is employed,
whereby computers, generally, will give up their secrets in virtual
droves. It's really all too terrible, so there's absolutely no excuse
not to give it up for a new and corrected OS;- that's called The
Patch. It's better that you are immediately responsive, that you only
place your trust in a safe manner, as an unknown extent of these
exploits can only get worse if you don't. Only Trusted Sources are to
be permitted from now on, and never -ever- download program code
elsewhere.

Google's discovery of Meltdown and Spectre have now been declared
freely to be given -- within their full Grecian implementation: Typus,
impression, (sic) of a Logos, or word -- with all rights waived.
Thank the Gods;- the importance of this information can never,
henceforth, be underestimated.

that refers to Athlon 64 X2, jeez I didn't know you could run Windoze 10
on something that old.
I supposed Microsoft used some SIMD instructions that the AMD didn't have.

At this point, Microsoft hasn't even acknowledged there
is a problem. It's been posted to their forum, which is a
start. But don't expect them to be honest about how
they screwed the pooch on this one. Eventually, they'll
do a V2 of the patch.

The one person who got bricked (user "Cameo") was driving
a Turion. We still don't know the full spectrum of
affected CPUs.

These flaws may have been with us about as long as we've had PCs. We likely lived
with them for many years. No telling how many rocks had to get looked under before
they were discovered.

It seemed that AMD CPU patch should be 405968*4*, not 405689*2*!

KB 4056892 is just the cumulative update pack for Win 10 build 1709,
bringing it to 16225.192!
