If you meant the E6700 Core 2 Duo, that is the best chip by far. I got the
E6600, which isn't that much slower and still has the 4MB cache. I suggest
you consider that too.

Even the lower speed Core 2 Duo processors will blow away everything
else. If you want to blow more than $1,000 on the CPU you can certainly
do that, but the E6600 for $400 or less is a good compromise, still very
powerful and it has the 4MB cache memory without costing over $1,000.

The P4 and the Duo Core will be retired by Intel at the end of this year due
to the continuing thermal problems those designs have. The Core 2 Duo is
just released, runs far cooler than the previous designs, and is much more
efficient (faster at running calculations.)

Well as Barry and Synapse say, Core2 Duo blows everything else out of
the water...it just comes down to how much you can afford. That said
even the base models with 2MB are said to be stellar performers. You
pays your money and takes your choice!

www.anandtech.com.

stand-alone. Of course, having chosen the processor, you will have to
step through the motherboard minefield. Again, the above sources,
particularly Anandtech, are helpful.
