Default DL380 (G1) Wake-On-LAN???

The embedded NIC of the DL380 G1 is listed everywhere as being
WOL-capable.

Using the system tools (HPASMCLI under freeBSD in my case) I can
*enable* WOL, and HPASMCLI even reports that it is successfully
enabled.

After a power-down and -up again, the status is still *enabled* BUT it
never wakes.

I thought that the Link LED on the NIC (on the RJ45 socket) was
supposed to light even if the DL380 is in standby, if WOL is enabled
--- but it doesn't in my case.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?

I do have one supicion: On the riser board are three solder spots
market WAKE ON LAN and a + sign. This looks like a spot where a header
connector could have been mounted....

Should there be additional wiring to power the NIC in standby mode?

/Jacob

Didn't know the DL380 was WOL capable.
Do a google on Compaq DL380 G1 wol setup
and you will find some references to wol. Some needs translating to English
(use googles translate feature)
Perhaps you will find what you need there.

Good luck,
Phil

Wish that life was that easy... There are 222 hits, including my own
posts to some Q&A forums. Most of them are just commercial listings
(offering DL380 and listing ***AAArrrggghhh!!!!) their WOL-capability.
There was one thread somewhere where a couple of guys actually dicussed
the issue, giving real hint that in the end..... Didn't work.

Is this the best kept secret in the inner circle of system admins?

Given the number of DL380's out there in the field, there must be
someone who got this to work?

Luckily for me, the end of summer is near and I look forward to long
dark evening spent behind the screen to solve the DL380WOL mystery ;-)

Or? Anyone really knows how to....

Cheers/Jac

WOL is unusual on a server. Remember, servers are desingend to work in a
datacentre and stay on continuously. So having a situation where a server is
off and you want to wake it up via a NIC is rather unusual.

dark evening spent behind the screen to solve the DL380WOL mystery ;-)

A Compaq engineer explained it to me about 6 years ago. This is what I
remember of it
It's supposed to work just like a PC. You send a "magic packet" - something
like 27 special wake-up packets to the MAC address of the NIC (You need an
application that does this), and it powers itself on. Though he could not
see why you might want to use it on a server - he said use a Remote Insight
Board instead.;

Hmm, that remote Insight board might be an option....

I went through all the regular moves, sent (and monitored on another
PC) the Magic packet (although there are several -non- standards I
believe) but to no avail :-(

I know a server is supposed to be "always on" - that's why I bought the
DL380, they are built to last. It's just because I want to stash it
away in a place so we can sleep at night without the wind tunnel sounds
;-) and I might want to reboot it after a serious ( my UPS) power
outage.

I have a similar setup somewhere else where we want a standby server on
alert 5, which we must be able to launch remotely.

The third (and best?) reason: Everyone says it's possible, so I want to
do this....

I understand that under Linux, you should power down the server
(especially the NIC) in a special way before WOL will work. I wonder if
this means that WOL after a power outage is out of the question?

More suggestions anyone?

/Jacob
