As per subject. Looking to upgrade a Radeon 9700 Pro on a
3.8GHz AGP system. Does (or did) Nvidia make a controller for AGP that's as fast as ATI's X850 XL? |

This page doesn't list the 850 XL, but the XT has a core clock of 520 MHz with 16 pixel pipelines. The fastest AGP nVidia card is the 6800 Ultra, with 16 pipes and a clock of 400 MHz. (The page also lists a 450 MHz overclocked Ultra, which may be the rare Ultra Extreme.) On the other hand, the raw numbers don't necessarily tell the whole story. The Doom 3 engine notoriously favors the nVidia cards: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1634115,00.asp The 850 XT doesn't have much higher specs than the 800XT (500 MHz core), so hope that it's similar. Newer ATI Catalyst drivers may change the story, but I didn't find a comparable test online. If you notice the AGP 6800GS, note that it's closer to the original vanilla 6800. (The PCI-E 6800GS is closer in performance to the original 6800GT, so it's a decent bargain, for those with PCI-E systems.) Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn. I remember seeing a 6800 Ultra somewhere factory overclocked and with 512MB
RAM. Aha googling "6800 ultra 512" brought up quite a few! Looks like they are all over $500 and I'll be curious to see if you find any in stock. But would *that* be faster than ATI's fastest 850? I have no idea. Looking at Tom's hardware's last VGA chart (Summer 2005), I see... http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/07/...vii/page2.html The X850 XT PE is the king in most of the benchmarks. And usually the X850 XT is just below it with sometimes even the X800 beating the 6800 Ultra. The only benchmarks I saw where the 6800 Ultra won was Doom 3, Chronicles of Riddick, and something called "Pacific Fighters". That *is* the 256MB 6800 Ultra but hey I have no idea how much faster, if any, the 512MB version is. It *could* have much faster core & mem like the 7800 GTX 512 vs. the 7800 GTX 256 but I don't know. -- Scotter "Rick S." wrote in message ink.net... As per subject. Currently, and I don't see this changing as no new cards planned or present support AGP, the fastest AGP video card you can buy is the ATI X850XT. There may be X850XT PE versions available too but the difference in performance is negligible. X850XT beats fastest NVidia AGP card (6800 Ultra) in most every benchmark except for Doom3 engine based games and Chronicles of Riddick. Generally speaking opengl will be faster on the 6800 Ultra.
