Joanna,
As far as I know Compaq only supported W2K on the few Presarios that
originally came with it preinstalled. That is why there are no Compaq
drivers available for W2K for the 5446. Windows XP likely would have a
better chance of running well on your Presario, due to its larger driver
database/support built-in.

Hi,

I know next to nothing about hardware and drivers, so forgive any

ignorance
that comes across...

I recently 'clean' installed Windows 2000 over my Win 98 Presario (5446).
The installation I'm using at the minute is actually the third in 2 weeks,
so I don't want to to do anything that will force me to have do a 4th
install - I'm fed up restoring files and settings for the 3 users who use
this PC. Anyway - the problem:

I keep getting BSODs with IRQ error messages about memory dumps. After
researching this it led me to look at my device drivers and I discovered
that things don't look too hot in device manager - a few devices are
duplicated and most drivers are now generic or Microsoft-branded rather

than
Compaq. 3 devices share IRQ 7, and they strangely happen to be 3 of only

4
drivers I installed manually via *.exe files (my ESS Solo audio, my
SupraExpress modem driver and Intel Chipset Graphics controller). The
other driver I installed manually was the Canon printer driver - and it's
listed under (printer) port - but then I see it listed again as '? Other
devices'. Also, when I look at a full system report, there's 'debug' info
at the bottom that mentions these 3 shared drivers. Basically, I don't

like
what I'm seeing and I want to fix things in Device Manager as cleanly as
possible, put things back to scratch.

I think what's happened (and remember, I'm a novice so don't s****** at my
thoughts) is that maybe I installed 4 new drivers over the top of
preinstalled compaq drivers that are still lurking and causing me

problems.
I should have removed a lot of stuff from my Win 98 before I 'clean
installed' Win 2K. I thought I'd done enough, as I had actually 'clean
installed' Win 98 using the Quick Restore CD before installing Win2k, so
basically anything left over was the bare minimum on a Compaq Win98

factory
state PC. I manually deleted the C:\Windows folder and removed Win 98
system files (like msdos.sys, config.sys etc), but I'm now realising I was
probably supposed to uninstall a bunch of drivers from device manager too.
I just assumed the 'clean install' or Win 2K would erase everything for

me.

Since I know so little about devices and hardware, I would like someone to
tell me first of all if I can uninstall 'everything' in Device manager to
create a clean slate or would that be PC suicide? I look at some devices
and I don't know what they are for or if I even need them. I already
uninstalled 'standard gaming port' (since I don't use any gaming hardware)
and it just gets detected & reinstalled when I reboots the PC. I even

went
into BIOS but there was very little I could change (only 3 or 4 IRQ slots
were listed and they didn't include 7). Aggh - what am I saying -
basically: I'M LOST. PLEASE HELP!

I have copied the device details from a system info utility (aida32 - cool
little app). I hope someone who knows better can maybe tell me what I
*should* be seeing... (I've updated Win2k to service pack 4 & all critical
updates)

Cheers in advance,

Joanna
