Actually got it figured out - - - I had the wrong cable plugged into
the slave. I ended up connecting the middle (grey, I think) connector
to the main drive and the end connector into the slave drive. I
rebooted and all works fine now.

You say the computer hangs... How? Does it even do the memory count or
startup screen?

If the IDE cable is upside-down, the computer won't do anything when turned
on (excepts fans running).
