I have no experience in digital video editing, although I am reasonably

What you need is VIVO (video in video out). Several companies now
include the feature on high end cards or special vivo versions of their
budget cards. These include ATI's All in Wonder series and NVidia's
Personal Cinema (manufactured by different companies under different
names). CompUSA usually sells the AIW's and the eVGA P.C.'s. Consider
that normally unless you spend a lot of money, VIVO is usally a feature
of the lower performance models.

TV-out will work for slide shows on your TV (composite RCA or s-video
connection) and do analog playback. Video input allow you to use it as
a capture device also and do analog records (i.e. non DV).

But for digital capture from a DV cam or similar device, you'll need a
firewire card.
