Default 6xxx doesn't work anymore in linux, while in windows it is fine

strange i say too! my guess is that xp put something in non-volatile
storage on my card while preparing for sleep mode...



Some screwing up of non-volatile mem is the only other possibility
indeed. The BIOS came to my mind as well, just some random error somewhere.

i tried 5 different drivers... nvidia, recompiled nvidia, nv, noveau and
vesa: xp should have a 12/10 sight to bork all this disk sectors and
nothing else!



Yes, I read that you tried many different drivers. But I thought that
maybe some other data might have been corrupted, more specifically the
kernel or some part of X.


However, kernel image is checked when being decompressed so that can't
be it, leaves X.
