Hi...a newbie here at building computers! thanks to read.
I wish to build a new comp in the following months,
(don't know exactly when but this fall for shure),to replace the actual
one (AMDK6-2 400Mhz) that will be eventually used for other less
intensive task...probably to host my personal web space and FTP server.
I'm slowly collecting infos about the available hardware on the market, and i'm
still having some questions about SATA. Seems a very promising replacement
as i saw on some websites, for the actual parallel ATA. I've seen a nice motherboard
that includes SATA controller chipset

but it's one among many motherboards that offer this feature. By looking at
the medium resolution image that ASUS provides, i can't see any EIDE
connector(s) on the board... only SATA, and i don't even know how much of SATA
drives this board can control. And now for the questions:
1- Since it seems that no cd-rom drives or cd-rw drives use this interface yet,
how would i be able to connect them to such board? Do i need to purchase
then a separate PCI socket EIDE controller for the cd-rom/cd-rw drives?
Or maybe a SATA to ATA adapter.....?
2-Even if i use such separate PCI EIDE controller...i bet that there's a driver i have to install
for it to work isn't it? Since i need to install an OS 1st before doing anything else(right?),
how i would be able to install Windows from a cd-rom drive controlled by such external
controller if it's own driver is not installed yet...?
I think at this point you probably have a good laugh (i really don't!) since it seems so obvious
to you...if it's the case, then please give me a primer on such infos or a good link that explain
what i can't understand yet...would be appreciated, since questions still flow in my mind. TIA
