Semiconductor major Advanced Micro Devices Inc has slashed prices of its
microprocessors across the globe by a maximum of 40 per cent and a
minimum of two per cent, which will be also be reflected in India.

The reduction in prices is due to intense competition in the sector, and
AMD's move follows that of its competitor Intel Corporation, which had
reduced the prices earlier, industry sources said on Sunday.

The move is an attempt to stay ahead of competition, they said, adding
the prices of raw materials in the international market were steady for
the last couple of months.

AMD's international price reduction would also be reflected in India in
the near-to short-term period. However, this might not lead to a quantum
rise in sales of personal computers and servers running on AMD
processors, they said.

AMD spokespersons, when contacted by PTI, declined to comment on the
move, stating that the company under its "corporate policy does not
comment on price reductions".

The prices of Opteron CPUs were slashed between 40 per cent and 18 per
cent, with Opteron 846 (40 per cent) topping the chart. Reduction was
made in prices of various series of Opteron and Athlon.

AMD's official web site isn't showing any reductions. The last price
reductions were on November 17th.
