ATI R520 is a 90 nanometre chip

The Incredible Shrinking Fudo

By Fuad Abazovic: Thursday 16 December 2004, 07:25

ATI IS HAPPY with the R520 "Fudo" even it might not be happy with the real
Mc Fudo. This chip is definitely good enough to bring some smiles to their
faces - at least that's what ATI hopes for. To be happy with R520.
Despite the other news, we can now add that R520 codenamed "Fudo" is going
to be ATI's first chip based on 90 nanometre architecture. Earlier, Xbitlabs
was running this news which it got from some analyst company.

This is the first time in a long while that ATI is willing to risk the
potential problems and try new shrinked marchitecture on new high end part
first. We all know what happened to Nvidia when it tried to do this with its
NV30.

ATI is confident that it will get things right and 90 nanometre chip will
mean less heat, a smaller and cheaper die and more space for an almost
endless number of transistors.

When we learn about R520 and how is it shaping up, this chip is starting to
look more and more interesting every single day. It's still a 2005 chip and
it will be buried in the labyrinth of tests, and sampling for some time
until we see it in Q2 next year. µ
