Changing SATA bios mode from native SATA to IDE - file or volume access issues

Ignore Arnie, he doesn't have a clue.

Why don't you just try it? At worse it fails to boot, and you restore BIOS setting.
If you have a PATA port using IDE driver, then atapi.sys is installed.

finally tossing all my old floppy disks - the end of an era

Do floppies use plutonium oxide or cadmium as media?
If you really want to recycle cheap plastics, use them as fuel.

Utility to password protect folders?

What's wrong with the logon password and NTFS permissions?
Passwords alone don't protect a stolen notebook, use a virtual encrypted drive.

Windows XP SSD tweaks?

No, flash memory does not have only 1000 write cycles.
Early cards like SM and CF did not have wear leveling and work for years.

Looking for decent SATA RAID controller

Avoid Arnie's bull**** advice, especially on RAID.
Software RAID is the proper desktop solution, you only use hardware RAID 5/6 on servers.

DO NOT use RAID controllers for RAID 0, this has been part...

CHKDSK hangs -- HDD failing?

Looks like massive corruption of the MFT (index).
If Windows boots, back up Documents and Setting and any others,
then reinstall XP with a format.

sector by sector HDD copying issues

This is the only correct message about signatures, the followups are stupid.
The signature is in the MBR, and is used by Windows to remember drive letters.
The volumes have serial numbers, and do not...

How full should a hard drive be?

With NTFS, you hit the MFT zone at 87.5%.
Around 85% you get fragmentation, above that the MFT zone also shrinks.

Just do analysis in defragger and look at the graph and stats.

Are these HD speeds OK?

The 175MB/s is during sector I/O, there are gaps and ECC that add overhead.
Multiply that by 0.8 and you get 120MB/s on the outer zone (first several GB).
The drive or channel with lower burst rate...

3TB drive access from XP over a network

Wild speculation on a topic you don't understand.
The 2TB limit is from 32bit LBA sectors, which is what the SCSI-3 standard of 2000 supported.
Applications do IO with byte offsets, which are 32 and...

3TB drive access from XP over a network

Win XP 32 only supports 2TB drives because 32 bit LBA is used by the disk class driver.
Win XP 64 and 2003 support 64 bit LBA with some service pack or hot fix.

If your RAID card supports drives...
