Seems the slower of the two is more popular.

Or why not just save wasting your money on a retiring technology and
get a Phenom triple core instead?

You should consider 7750 BE or 7850 BE!!! BE means black edition, which
means the multiplier is unlocked.

Is it because of the socket... or ....?

Looking at it yes it seems your suggested CPU's require AM2+ socket
My MB is AM2. Have been away from building machines for some time but
i suspect they are pinned different.

Seems the slower of the two is more popular.

The main reason the slower chip is more popular is simply the
price/performance ratio. The 6400+ is about 7% faster than the 6000+, but
I'll bet that it is more than 7% more expensive!

When I rebuilt a few years back, I wrote myself a little spreadsheet that
listed all the processors I was interested in, their price and their
performance at stock and overclocked. It quickly became clear that the Q6600
was the best bang per muck in my price range... I was only looking at Intel
CPUs, but the principle is the same.

Update just researched and discovered the AM2 and AM2+ are
interchangable

But i must add that im not a fan of overclocking and your suggested
CPU's run slower then the ones i am asking about.
