Detect Optimal Frequencies

How does the "Detect Optimal Frequencies" tool in ForceWare coolbits
work? With my 5900XT at home, the progress bar goes across once and I
get about 30MHz increases on core and memory. But, just for kicks, I
tried running it on my 5200 at work. The progress bar goes across the
dialog maybe ten times, then artifacts start appearing all over the
screen, and finally the system hard-locks. Shouldn't coolbits have
noticed as soon as the frame buffer started getting corrupted and
stopped pushing the frequency up?
