"Out Of Memory error when trying to start a program or while program
is running"

Please follow the troubleshooting steps to resolve your problem.
Troubleshooting steps:
1) Quit all other programs that are currently running.
To quit the typical program
· Right-click the program's icon on the taskbar, and then click Close.
2) Restart your computer and run the program again.
When you quit a program but don't restart your computer, the program
might not return memory resources to the system. Restarting your
computer releases the system resources.
To restart your computer
· Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart, and then click OK.
3) Do you have too many programs open?
If you have too many documents open or too many programs running at
the same time, you may not have enough free memory to run another
program.

To determine whether you have too many documents or programs open
1. Close any open documents other than your current one.
2. Quit any programs that you are not currently using.
3. Continue your interrupted task.
To quit the typical program
· Right-click the program's icon on the taskbar, and then click Close.
4) Is your program damaged?
If one of your program files is damaged, it can cause memory problems.

Please reinstall the application which is damaged.
5) Do you have enough free space for the virtual memory paging file on
your hard disk?
Windows 98 uses hard disk space, in the form of a virtual memory
paging file, to simulate RAM.

To determine which drive the Windows virtual memory paging file is on
1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
2. In the Named box, type Win386.swp. In Look In, click to select My
Computer, and then click Find Now.

To determine whether you have enough free disk space
· Increase the amount of free space on the drive on which the Windows
virtual memory paging file is located.

You have a choice of four actions you can take to free space:
· Empty the Recycle Bin.
· Delete any temporary files from the disk.
· Delete any obsolete or archived files from the disk.
· Remove any programs that you never use.

6) Do too many programs run automatically when you start Windows 98?
If you have too many programs set to run automatically when you start
Windows 98, you might not have enough free memory to run an additional
program, even after you restart your computer.

To determine whether you have too many programs set to run
automatically
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type Msconfig, and then click OK.
3. On the General tab, click to select Selective Startup.
4. In the Selective Startup area, click to clear the Process Win.ini
file check box and the Load startup group items check box.
5. Click OK, and then click Yes when prompted to restart your
computer.
If this action solves the problem, you can configure your computer to
always start up with no open programs.

To configure your computer so that no program opens automatically

1. Reset the changes you made in Msconfig:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type Msconfig, and then click OK.
c. On the General tab, select Normal Startup.
d. Click OK, and then click Yes when prompted to restart your
computer.
2. Delete all the shortcuts in the Startup folder
a. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start
Menu.
b. On the Start Menu Programs tab, click Remove.
c. Click the plus sign (+) next to the Startup folder to expose a list
of the programs set to run automatically.
§ If there is no plus sign (+) next to the Startup folder, there are
no programs set to run automatically. Click Close to abort this
procedure.
d. Click each of the shortcuts in the Startup folder, and then click
Remove.
This action deletes the shortcut from the Start menu, but it does not
delete the corresponding program from your hard disk.
e. Repeat step 4 for each shortcut in the Startup folder.
f. Click Close.
3. Disable any programs loading from the Win.ini file:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type Msconfig/B, and then click OK.
c. On the Win.ini tab, open [windows].
d. Click to clear the Load= and Run= check boxes.
e. Click OK.
4. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
5. Click Restart the computer, and then click OK.
6. Run the program again after the computer restarts.
7) Are you managing your own virtual memory settings?
If you're managing your own virtual memory settings, you may have
problems restarting your computer, your computer might not work
correctly, or you may receive an Out of Memory or a similar error
message when you attempt to run a program.
To have Windows 98 to manage your virtual memory settings
1. Click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, and then
double-click System.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Performance tab, and
then click Virtual Memory.
3. Click to select the Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings
(recommended) option, and then click OK.
