I currently have a TI4200 video card. Would a FX5500 but a noticeable
upgrade?

The Ti4200 is faster. I'd at least get a 6600GT. You'd notice
a nice performance boost. I went from a Ti4400 to a 6600GT, and enjoy
it very much. The FX59xx cards would be a decent upgrade, but doubt it
would be cost effective as a 6600GT is as good, or better.

Agreed and recently I upgraded from a Ti4600 to a 6600GT. There is a
great performance boost.

Unfortunately, this doesn't include the 5500.

At a guess, the 4200 and the 5500 would be roughly comparable. It wouldn't
be much of a performance upgrade, but the 5500 would support DirectX 9
features in hardware. (Games that require DX9 might want a faster card,
though. If you're not interested in games, the upgrade might be pointless.)

I agree that a 6600GT would be a significant upgrade. Unfortunately, such
cards are not inexpensive. (www.newegg.com has a couple of AGP 6600GT models
for less than $120US plus approx. $5 shipping, but they both involve
rebates.)

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

No. It might even be slower.

I went from a GeForce 3 200 TI to a FX5200 (a 5500 is simply an overclocked
5200) and frankly, it seemed to be worse in terms of performance.

However, apparently it supports more featues of DX9 than earlier models,
like shaders. But the performance stinks.
