Where is 2MG cache AMD x2
Hi All,
I wonder why 4000+ and 4800+ AM2 with 2 meg cache are so hard to find. At least not available on TigerDirect or Newegg. Profit margins? The slowest AMD dual core at Newegg with 2 MG is 5200+ Dennis |

The slowest AMD dual core at Newegg with 2 MG is 5200+ Dennis AMD has given up on the high end because they don't have a part that can compete with even the 65nm Core2s let alone the new 45nm Core2s that Intel is starting to ship. The 1/2M cache parts have smaller die sizes which makes them cheaper to produce, for AMD to survive they have to reduce their costs as much as possible. At the low end of the performance spectrum no one is looking at cache size, just price so AMD is only building small cache parts. You will notice that the 2X1M parts are in the 90nm process, there are no 65nm parts with 2M of cache. These parts are rebadged Opterons, the reason that they are still making Opterons in a obsolete process is that the server market has a large segment that cares more about platform stability then they do about price performance. To be specific, big companies qualify a specific hardware + software platform and then they expect to be able to buy that platform for several years. The chip vendors select a subset of their offerings which they will designate for long term support, those are the parts you are seeing on Newegg. |
