opteron dual reviews
 

Many of the opteron reviews I read are very old, what is up with that? I'm
itching to build one of these..

Too many of the review sites gets freebies from Intel therefore........

Unless you want MP, use an Atlon64 754pin.

Spend the Raptor money on more RAM instead. Disk performance doesn't
matter for workstations and for file servers you are much better off
getting a 3Ware controller and multiple 7200 RPM disks rather than using
10,000 RPM disks which are much more expensive per megabyte.

approx 110MByte/sec under Linuxc in RAID 0.

What are you doing that requires disk striping? Unless you are transfering
enormous amounts of data RAID 0 is a lose. For short files the access time
is completely dominated by rotational latency and seek time, transfer time
hardly enters into it. When you configure your system for RAID 0 what you
end up doing is making the access time of the file dependent on the piece
of the file that is farthest away from the heads. You also have to double
your block size which increases the amount of space that you waste when
fitting small files into large blocks. You are also doubling the chance
that a disk failure will wipe out your file system. If you are doing
something like video where the file sizes are huge then striping makes
sense. If you are doing anything else the only type of RAID that you want
to do is mirroring which will cost you performance but will dramamatically
reduce the chance of a catastrophic failure.

I'm in the process of putting together a Tyan Tiger K8W with a
Raptor 74GB from Newegg. The mobo is about $230 and the drive is
$215. I'm hoping to get a deal on some procs via some "friends in
the business."

The K8W was my choice principally because it is ATX and can work with
a 350W PS (which I currently have.) I understand anything P-IV
compatible will drive the board. I'm not going to bother with RAID 0
or anything....

Review on the Raptor have been great, and for the price, I'm
going to treat myself. Everyone I talked to said the program load
times are outstanding, and hell.. they (WD) give a five year warranty
!!

I'm still trying to find what DIMMS to use. The tiger has 4
slots, and I'm going to start with a pair of 512's. You MUST use
registered DDR, which is more expensive. Folks at AMD said to run
with whatever the MOBO people recommend, and the Tyan site is not much
help beyond specing Samsung, Micron, etc. I've seen warnings
against using Crucial Extreme due to bleeding edge timings.

I'll post again once I get her built and booted !!
