Nvidia GeForce 7600GS finally out for AGP

This is the definitive upgrade for AGP users like myself.
I clearly remember when a year ago I talked about a 7600
for AGP and most in this group didn't believe me like
many other ideas I defend and now we see it has become a
reality. Again this proves I'm in most instants right.

This is a must buy for AGP users and I'll be one of them.
The price could be better meaning lower but again its a
great card and I think a fair price... around 165 euros
Don't forget this cards is close in performance to a 6800.

Basically any PC Gamer with a AGP system with a card bellow
a 6800 GT should upgrade to this new 7600 GS.

I bet with this card I will not need to upgrade until late
2008 and by then the choice will be for a DX10 card which
now still doesn't exist, so its the exact right time to do
the upgrade.
Spec highlights: 400MHz GPU, 12 pipelines, 800Mhz 256MB
128 bit DDR 2 memory, AGP 8x, and it includes support for
HDTV and its "Vista" Ready.
What more could we ask?
Well the only think I would like for this 7600 GS to have
is support for Windows 98
The only drawback is no support for legacy Windows 98 and
I still have dual boot in my system...
Anyone knows how to make it run in Windows 98?
Its really the only issue I see in this card.

Its out in Australia as well. But 400 aussie dollars. A pcie version
is 300 or less :(

Only one brand out so far so i'am hopefull other brands will be
cheaper :)

Wan't on in my HTPC box. Has full Purevideo Capabilitys. Will conect
it up via component to my HD tv :)

Actually that award goes to Gainward's 7800GS+.
24 pipelines, 512MB, overclockable to 500/1400
and beyond etc. The 7600GS would qualify as a
decent runner-up.

Yeah. The 7600GS uses DDR2, and has slower clock speeds, but
leadtek has a 7600GT AGP. It has same clock speeds as the reference
7600GT PCI-E versions. Here is the link:

Obviously the 7800GS would be the perfect choice if it was
not for a problem...
The (big) problem with the 7800GS is costing 300 plus euro.
The 7600GS is half that price and I bet in some month it
will be near the 100 euro mark.
So bottom line I do prefer to recommend a piece of hardware
that costs 100 euro than 300 euro, simply cause I want the
PC gaming platform to be affordable, democratic and easy
accessible to all.

I always spent more money on "software" than on "hardware"
and don't we all do?

I "prefer" to spend money on more "software" than hardware,
but the 5 Prey units I've bought were a one time thing, the
first time and probably the last I don't know... but more
important it was not a normal event but a "statement" I
wanted to make so it can't caractrize my buying habits.

But even so its clear I spend much more on "software" than
on hardware cause its the "software" that actually give me
joy not the hardware.

What resolutions, detail level etc are you expecting to
be able to play at for the next 2 years?

Now I expect to be able to run the majority of games with a
resolution of 1024x768... and if in the future I will need
to lower to 800x600 it will not be a problem for me.
I now still run the majority of PC Games in 800x600 so I'm
familiar with it.
I still have a CRT and I do not like very much to push it
above 1024x768 cause it becomes more painful to my sight.
If I move to a LCD will I be in trouble due to then having
a native resolution of 1280x1024? probably but I really do
not know when will I have to switch to LCD...
My wish would be to upgrade everything, PC and Monitor only
in 2 years time.

And as for the 7600GS being the "definitve" upgrade to AGP
users (those which can't afford a 7800GS) what I tried to say
was... when the 7600GS will no longer be able to run a Game
it will not be cause of its power but rather cause of no DX10
support but that will also happen to any current GPU in the
market being it even the more powerfull PCI-E card like the
7900GT so everyone will need to upgrade, not only those with
a 7600GS.
I do feel the 7600GS is the right card for me at the right
time and it will maximize the lifetime of my AGP PC for
Gaming, and I do expect to last 2 more years although I
can be wrong but in 2 years will see if I was wrong or not.

Don't have enough knowledge to mess around those.
Do you know were can I get some help?

I think the last official nvidia driver for win98 would
include support for the 7800GS and the 7600GT*, so you
could try hacking away from there.

The last official Nvidia driver for Windows 98 also doesn't
include support for the 7800GS although I don't know if any
one has been able to hack it.
Very unfortunate Nvidia not supporting the 7th generation
geforce cards in Windows 98 but I guess they had to end it
sometime... ATI ended it much sooner didn't they?

Again, if you consider 640x480 at 10fps on minimum detail settings to
be 'running'. Even the 7800GS can't run FEAR or Tomb Raider Legends
comfortably above 1152x864 with maximum detail settings, so the 7600GS
is already unlikely to be able to run those games by my standards.

Recent games are hugely GPU-limited, so buying a more limited GPU makes
little sense to me.
