XFX Geforce Fx5200

I am looking to replace a Geoforce 4 MX420 64Mb DDR. My price limit is
about £75 tops. I have seen a XFX Geoforce FX5200 AGP8x 256MB DDR DVI
TV-Out for about £60.
Is that a good buy, and is the card any good. I have just started playing
alot of PC games so I want a powerful card. I have got a AMD 2600+ XP
processor and 1.5 gig of PC3200 DDR.
All help and advice appreciated.

Thanks

The 5200 is the entry level card and is slowww as molasses. It is NOT a
"powerful card".

So you want to replace a piece of crap card with another Piece of crap
card?

Okay... you're saying you WANT a powerful video card and want to PLAY
PC games?! The 5200fx is not "powerful" its pure **** for gaming.

Here, look at this... Double your budget to get DECENT ability.

Then download the UT2004 deom from www.unreal.com - or from Nvidia's
website... and see how it runs. The 5200 on your setup would get
about 10~15fps.

Read this and let me know what you think:

Ok read the article and I see where you are coming from. However I can
double my budget. £100 is top whack I can afford. What can you suggest
then. I know nothing about graphics cards at all so I apologise for my
stupidity.

You say

1. I want a new card and I have around 75 pound

2. I want a fast powerfull card that can play games with ease!

That is..mutually exclusive.

Though...look for the GF4 ti 4200 ..maybe second hand ...that gives
performance for a good price!

raj February 14th 04 02:31 AM

any fx 5200 sux ass, get a geforce 4 ti a good performace and will be a
5600ultra, the 5200 is like same performace as a geforce 3 ti 200
undercloked and with 64 bit ram wich is purely ****, like a dx 8 geforce 2
lol

By all means, you're not stupid... you're asking before you spend what
little money you have.

£75 is wasted if it can't give you the performance you want or hope to
get. If you can, try to get your hands on a Ti4200 64mb, they are
about that price - IF YOU CAN FIND THEM. (At least $70USD)

I bought my first Gf2 card many years ago, I had problems with it and
coming here HELPED me... I wasted 2 days of pain with the POS - but I
took it back and got something better... paid $15 more.

(64bit DDR GF2mx = crap, took it back and paid $15 more for the 128bit
SDR vesion - for a total of $145usd)

if you want DX9 - the absolute LOWEST you should go for is the
fx5600Ultra... its at least as fast as the TI4200 is many cases.

Anything lower - would mean sub-standard performance.

Have a look at other threads discussing the price of the FX5900, available
from £115 upwards; I think that is the smart place to be in terms of most
card for your money. Yes, it's over your budget, but you won't end up doing
what I did - I spent £60 on an FX5200 at Christmas (yeah, I thought it was a
powerful card as well - I didn't do my research!!), and I'm now throwing it
out and replacing it with the FX5900. This looks like a far better balance
for my 2800+ and 1Gb RAM.

Regards,

Pete.
