Opteron 165: when will warehouses run out of 'em?
Like it says, when will we stop seeing Opteron 165s one the price
lists? And, when it disappears off the charts, how much will an Opteron 170 or higher cost at that time? Will prices continue to trend steadily upward as supply dwindles, or would the prudent buyer be smarter waiting for prices to go down instead of acquiring one now at today's price? Opteron 170 $405 -- worth two 3500+s? Is it likely that the Opteron 180 will drop in price to $128 shipped when AM2 is unveiled (and, presumably, 3rdgen sckt 939 boards are still available for very cheap)? |

They're a server CPU. They're not going to make your games run faster than a X2. -- Conor, Same ****, different day. |

Yes they will, they have larger cache and can overclock very nicely indeed :) Running an Opteron 144 here - normally clocks at 1.8Ghz, doing 2.7Ghz stable! Hellraiser............. |

They're a server CPU. They're not going to make your games run faster than a X2. You might be thinking of the original series of Opteron socket 940 chips. These were designed for servers. The current batch of Denmark and Venus Socket 939 Opterons are high-performance workstation or client CPUs. They are of similar design to the San Diego Athlon 64s and Athlon X2 Toledos but seem to run at slightly lower voltages and easily overclock. The Opteron 165 is of particular interest because it is a 2 x 1mb cache dual core CPU that can be very easily overclocked to 2.7ghz. The 165's price is lower than the entry Athlon X2 CPU with the same cache though the 165 has a lower clock speed. But if it can be easily oc'ed to a fast speed, its basic clock speed doesn't matter much. |

Jeez, its getting hard to keep up with all the cores nowadays. -- Conor, Same ****, different day. |
Opteron 165: when will warehouses run out of 'em?
So, will prices on Dual Core S939 Opterons go down before retailers
exhaust their supplies. Although the rumor that AMD is discontinuing production of Opteron 939s is likely false, it is founded on the rumor that AMD has stopped shipping s939 Opterons to resellers & retailers. How much will prices fall? So, *when* should I buy my Opteron 175? Next month? June? September? |

How much will prices fall? So, *when* should I buy my Opteron 175? Next month? June? September? Try now. If you need it, get it. AMD had their regular price cut last month and just had a big price drop on 940 pin Opteron dual-cores. I can't imagine anything else will happen for a few months. And just to show you I will put my money where my mouth is, I just assembled a new Opteron 175 system a few days ago as an upgrade from my aging dual MP2800 system. A Tyan K8E, 2 Gigs of ECC DDR-400 (non-reg) and a Opteron 175. Very nice. Once I get the new video card I'll check, but I believe the power consumption (and heat output) is less with the new system which is nice because it certainly has more punch. -- Enjoy your life; be pleasant and gay, like the birds in May. |
