OT request
 

Hi all.. I've been away for a while now..
I'm hoping that some of you can help me with my selection..
I'm working on a remodel at home and am wiring the place w/
CAT5e for gigabit ethernet.. I've got home-run wiring going out to
the garage and have a couple of 36" cabinets out there for all
the wires. Anyway, I was looking for a good rock-solid gigabit
switch and rock-solid router.. I'm hoping to find a router that
can take the output from the gigabit switch and keep it all
at gigabit speeds.. Ideally this will plug into a cable modem
which I'm sure isn't gigabit yet, but likely will sometime in the
future.. Anyway, I was looking at some used Cisco stuff but
most stuff for sale appears to be 10/100 not gigabit.. Any other
suggestions from you regulars here that have slick setups in
your garage? Many thanks!

Nevermind.. I've decided to get a Cisco 2801 or 1841
router.. Seems that both are still supported h/w by
Cisco and should be equally overkill for home use (8-

I just deployed a GBit Procurve - was one of the cheapest on the market.
And to get back on topic: At work I have two DL360G2 working as routers.
I rolled my own FreeBSD setup, but there are plenty of ready-made router
packages available, both commercial and free. The DL360 has onboard dual
GBit nics, so it perfectly suits your requirements.

I've currently got an older Proliant 6400 that I'd like to use for a
router
replacement, but I've got it in use as my main server doing everything
from email to database hosting, etc. I'd prefer not to have my
mainline
machine also as my firewall/router to ensure that IF something were to
compromise the machine, they wouldn't be able to wipe the disks clean
nearly as easily.. Anyway, I had pondered that before and may revisit
it if nothing else pans out.
