dell 1564 speakers by RnR[_2_]
Just curious for those that have a 1564, if you multitask while mp3's or streaming music, do you get static thru the speakers? IMO the 1564 isn't great sound for playing music even without static.

The tech support ritual by Ron Hardin
For BSODs in a new Latitude XP Pro, tech chat, after running diagnostics found nothing, suggests reinstalling XP clean. No harm to try; but it's a ritual on a new machine. It does get rid of bloatware. My own hunch is it's a HD controller. Is that in the HD or on the motherboard?

Dell 1564 new install by RnR[_2_]
Some time ago I tried to swap out a hard drive that had a XP install from a dell 1405 into this dell 1564. It booted up to a point and stopped. Does anyone know exactly why and how to make it work? When it stopped, I think it stopped prior to the OS. Is there a bios setting that needs...

I'm Having HDD Issues :( by Monica
*My C drive is fine. 90% empty/free. Error check was uneventful but defrag said some files couldn't be defragged and said to view those files in the report. The report box showed no files that couldn't be defragmented. *My internal backup drive (E) is FULL. 14% free. Time to upgrade. It...

Acronis use case help by No Name
I want to back up a 500gb main drive on a 1tb external eSata hard drive. I was thinking of partitioning the external drive into a matching sized main partition and the rest. Then using Acronis to clone the laptops hard drive to the first partition, and thus having a bootable backup. The 2nd...

630i: Overclock Ram 800MHz to 1066MHz?? by Don Cohen[_2_]
Hi, I have a brand-new Dell 630i (6gb 800MHz RAM, QuadCore Q6600, dual 640gb SATA HD's, nVidia GE9800 512mb). Apparently it is 'acceptable' to Dell in terms of warrantee, and mentioned both on their website, and confirmed by the sales guy I dealt with, that one can overclock the RAM from...

Cat5 works, Cat5e doesn't by jim_tehma (e-mail isn't checked)
Hi, I have a network with 2 dell computers. One is a D810 latitude laptop. The other is an old Dimension XPSR desktop. The computers are networked with a linksys befsr41 router. I plug my DSL to the router too. The DSL modem had a Cat5 cable. That goes to the router. The router had a Cat5 cable....

Wireless configuration on 3 Dell laptops by paul8
I am wondering why our 3 laptops have quite different elements selected in their XPhomes wireless configuration. Of course they all have the TCP/IP selected, but it would be nice to know about what is otherwise needed for a quite basic laptop on a simple router at home. For example: One has...

Norton by No Name
The Norton that came with my wife's dell allows installs on two additional machines. The disk says it is good for Win 7, but nothing about 64 bit Win 7. Should it work under that OS too? Thanks,

Paging Owners of XPS Studio 8100's and 9000's by powrwrap
I'm starting to shop more earnestly for a new Dell XPS Studio computer. I want the 9000 but for economical reasons will probably buy the 8100. However, I am choking on the current pricing. I remember pricing them out last winter/early spring and I remember being able to get a nicely equipped 8100...

Bootable eSata backup software? by No Name
I recently bought an iomega eSata/USB external hard drive. On the box they touted some of their software that claimed to be able to create a bootable backup image on the external hard drive. I googled their software and it did not sound good. But I love the concept. Create a partition on the...

Prediction: How my new Dell Inspiron will die by Al Dykes
I've bought a Dell 1464 and it is at least as good as I expected it to be. Build quality appears to be very high. With care, I would expect a long life out of it except for one decision made by Dell that probably saved them $0.05 per machine and that would only be discovered by using the...

Firefox Wow! by Pat Conover[_2_]
I finally got sick enough of IE8 to try Firefox and all I can say is WOW! It's like driving a Ferrari compared to a Kia. You folks always recommended it, but I never knew it was that much faster. I use IE8 because a lot of my business sites only use it and I thought I was pretty much stuck...

Som progress around touchpads? by paul8
I am quite impressed by the new Macbooks large touchpads. Not that I need to use more than one finger. But I do not appreciate having to carry a mouse along with my Dell laptop. Looking at Dell.com, I cannot find any info about touchpads. Generally Dell is not telling much about their new laptops....

610 Workstation still rattling badly by [email protected]
Hi.. posted on this before. I own a 610 Workstation and must say the case it one big piece of junk. For over a year, I've been cutting and sticking 1/4" wide strips of adhesive-back rubber foam on every conceivable seam in the case, but STILL cannot resolve the rattling. The worst is the front...

Service request report by No Name
Today I called Dell service because of a non-functioning wired NIC in a Latitude D830. I had determined to my satisfaction before calling that it was a hardware problem. 10 minutes after calling I was speaking with a human in the Philippines. He was intelligent and had excellent communication...
