I am searching for a NAS supplier resp. NAS model that releases firmware
updates with security and bug fixes on a regular basis and as fast as
possible and also provides longer term support (i.e. more than 2 years)
The NAS model should be a 4-bay one with RAID, encryption support and
minor...

The WD Greens used to have a timeout of about 10 seconds, and they only
had a DOS utility to change it. What's the state of their Greens now?

I am going to stay with WD drives, the Seagates look scary. But the new

USB stick leaking by
Linea Recta[_2_]
I used a Lexar USB stick yesterday to boot a computer. I haven't used the
stick intensively, but now I noticed that it is leaking sticky stuff from
the seam on the sides. Any idea what the stuff is? Is it toxic? Can I keep
using the stick normally?

Seagate SeaTools versions by
Percival P. Cassidy
I had SeaTools 1.2.x for Windows and did the "check for update" thing,
which told me that there was no later version.
When I searched online, however, I found that the Seagate Web site has
ver. 1.4.0.4. Yet even that says nothing about compatibility with
Windows 10.
Very strange.

Format of "Enterprise" drives by
Percival P. Cassidy
As I look for a reliable 4TB drive to replace some older drives in an
older machine (SB850 controller), I see that some, especially Seagate,
come in a variety of formats: 4Kn, 512e, 512n. Which of these would work
in that machine? -- presumably NOT the 4Kn, but maybe I'm wrong about that.
Which...

NAS drive for Desktop? by

I'm thinking about replacing the two 1TB Seagate drives that have
outlasted their 5-yr. warranties in a desktop machine by a 4TB drive.
A 4TB Seagate "desktop" drive (actually called "Barracuda" these days)
runs at 5900rpm (but they don't tell you that -- and 50+ years ago a

A bad sector checker program in Macs? by

Hello.
Does anyone know of a free program that can check for bad sectors in
Macs (e.g., MacBook Pro from early 2008 ) without losing datas? I
don't care if it runs in or outside of Mac OS X (currently
v10.5.8/Leopard installed). Booting from USB/discs is fine too. I was
hoping Mac OS X came...
