Changing motherboard by
Alex Moreau
I'm about to change my motherboard but keep my existing CPU. It's a 4400+x2.
Will I be able to remove the CPU with the heatsink intact, or will I have to
remove the heatsink first and then the CPU? (maybe I should remove it and
clean and replace the thermal compound anyway?)
Thanks,
Alex

Hello!
I'm looking for information about cost of page fault exception in
cycles for modern Opteron processors. Especially I'm
interested in number of CPU cycles between invalid address hit and
calling an exception handler. I have googled a lot, but without any

Could anybody help ?

x86 or PowerPC for network processing by
Alexander Krizhanovsky
Hello,
I'm not sure that I'm posting to the right group - sorry if I'm wrong.
We need to choose hardware platform for our network processing
appliance (common 1-2U server, not an embedded device). Currently
we're going to use only base hardware, without specific hardware like
NPU or FPGA. I have...

BIOS flash mapping by
Alfie Noakes
In the past I've done lots of embedded flash programming at work, so
decided to have a muck about with the flash BIOS in an old Pentium II
I've got.
The flash is a 1 Mbit (128k x 8) device and I can see a hunk of it in
memory at segment F000, but I can't find the other 64K (it's not at
E000),...

Baffling problem with Asus M2N32-SLI based machine by
alisonnic
I have a baffling problem with a computer I built about six months
ago, based around an Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard.
After a series of problems (see history, below), this computer ran
fine for several weeks. Then, a couple of days ago, after several
hours of heavy use, when I exited a game,...

Processor advice please by
Alistair
Hi all,
I'm just about to replace my aging XP1600 system with a nice shiny new
shuttle...but...I've not been paying much attention to the processor market
and now it's all gone confusing!!
I've been using AMDs even since my first K5/400 back in the early 90s so I
plan to stick with them.

Problems Installing XP-Pro on Asus MB P5S800-VM by
[email protected]
Hi all,
Hope someone could shed some light on a strange problem I have in
installing XP-Pro. (clean install)
Windows reports after copying files that it can not see the HDD. Which
is a SATA 120g. I checked
this drive on another PC and it has no problems.
I installed XP onto it with another PC...

More AMD RV770 / Radeon HD 4850/4870 details by

Apparently the official NDA on RV770 / 4800 series expires in less
than 2 hours as of this posting. That said, I found some interesting

CPU for HTPC by
Anders Bang
Hi,
Would an AMD Turion 64 be a good CPU solution for a HTPC, which obviously
has to run cool and quiet, but which also has to run on a fair level of
power consumption given that I plan to use is as a file-server for 24/7/365?
Regards
Anders

4400+ / 4600+ / 4800+ by
Andrea
Here in Italy the dealers (all fo thme I asked) declare 512kb for 4400/4600
both.
And 1Mb only for 4800.
In the AMD site I found 1Mb for 4400 and 4800; and 0,5Mb for 4600.
Is it possible to have 2 different type of cpu for different markets ?
Or there are wrong informations in the dealer...

lit, but absolutely nothing happens when I try to power up (no fans,
lights, nothing).
Are there any tests I can do to determine if the power supply...

Strange reboot problem on Asus A8N-SLI w/ A64 3800+ running XP by

emulator called NetTerm (version 4.2.c). If I do a text paste into that
program (or...
