Destroying Hard Drives by
Alan Jeffs
I have several hard drives to destroy/completely erase. They are already
removed from the computer cases. Dismantling them one by one and sanding
the disks is messy and time consuming. Extreme heat comes to mind as an
approach. Anyone with any experience putting them on the barbeque set...

am trying to put a PC together for ~£350.

Socket A vs. Socket 939? by
Alceryes
Does anyone have any performance comparisons (games/synthetic) between
socket A and socket 939?
I'm looking for something that uses the same speed rated CPU (like an XP
2800+ vs. AMD64 2800+), same memory, same video card, and same hard disks.
I know the socket 939 system will be faster but I'd...

How to colour PC plastic? by
Noozer
I know that spraypaint will work, but will look like crap after a few bumps
and scrapes - even with a paint and primer specifically made for plastic.
What is an easy way to change a beige drive to a black one? How about to
silver?
Thx!

dual monitor issue by
Bacchus
Hi
I just setup everything to run 2 monitors for a larger dektop, which I need
badly. I am running Win 2000 and have one video card in the VGP slot
(monitor 1) and one in the PCI (monitor 2). I setup everything in the
display properties as well.
The problem is, all I am seeing is a mess on the...

Does thermal paste go off? by
D-Dan
OK - I've noticed lately that my CPU has been running hot ( 50C) -
Athlon XP 2400+ - not overclocked. Decided a few weeks back to clean
all the fans, which helped a bit, but not much. I assumed the
unusually high ambient temp here in the UK was to blame, but it's
been cooler today and the CPU was...

picture messed up on 6600 GT by
LD
Hi all,
a weird error.
I was playing Black Hawk Down when the PC crashed.
Afterwards, the picture was very distorted in the game, as well as in some
videos. Windows GUI looks fine. Tried re-installing the drivers to no avail.
I'm on a flat panel, but that should not affect things. Game was...

Raid question - drives of different size by
GT
I have no experience of RAID at all. I currently have a 160GB HD which is
starting to fill up and I am considering a larger drive, but don't want to
bin this one. If I get a new 250GB drive, what RAID options do I have with
the 2 drives of different speeds + sizes?

heat sync gel / glue by
[email protected]
... this wasn't very bright of me -- i was pulling on the heat snyc
(with fan built in) sitting on top of an AMD-K6-2 processor -- I didn't
realize that it was held on by some kind of gel or glue -- now it won't
"re-stick" (for lack of a better word) -- once I stand the tower up it
will stay for...

Memtest report error... by
John-Y
I recently used memtest86 after experiencing many serious system
instabilities (random file corruption, system crashes). Basically memtest
would report thousand of errors in a matter of minutes.Turned out the the
problem was caused by a faulty Bios setting (memory was set to 'performance
mode'....

Burning DVD+R9 with NED ND-2510A -- success! by
Cyde Weys
So I updated the firmware on my ND-2510A to the latest available, 2.18,
and updated my burning program (Nero) to the latest edition, 7 Premium.
Windows still wasn't recognizing blank DVD+R9 media, but Nero was, so
I decided to go ahead with it anyway. The whole burn took 38 minutes
at 2.4X and the...

who invented this crap? by
Mr.Bolshoy Huy
I couldnt connect my digital camera to my PC running Win98SE for a few
days because the USB was disabled in the BIOS!
Isnt Win95 and everything afterwards supposed to be plug-n-play?
Why do I have to mess around with the BIOS and IRQ and install drivers
for this and that at all?
BIOS? IRQ?

formatting compaq presario sr1303wm by
kevin
I think a system reinstall would be the best option. When you
reinstall Windows, you have the chance to format the disk.
I'm not sure about the process demounting, but since you want to
format the disk (erase everything), you still need to install
Windows.

Does thermal paste go off? by
D-Dan
Just an update - went and bought a new fan & heatsink. Used paper
towels and cotton buds to clean the gunk of the processor and polish
the die - applied fresh thermal paste with a rubber glove (just a
dot) and refitted. 10 degree drop in the diode temp, and at idle the
diode is now 3 degrees below...
