Help with failed drive by
?????
I have a Toshiba MK3021GAS 30GB Laptop Hard Drive which has been in
my laptop for a long time (4 years).
Recently, after I did a hard reset, Windows XP failed to boot off of
it. Gave me an 0x0000ED error (UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error). I tried
booting Windows Recovery disk but checkdisk said it...

@drian
Well, here they are, granted, in back order:

Looks like whoever said they would be around $300 is correct.

SATA drive's bridge chip by
@drian
Does the bridge chip installed on Maxtor, WD and IBM/Hitachi SATA drives
affect performance significantly? I didn't realize that these makes of
drives didn't natively support Serial ATA. As I believe, only Seagate does.

Incompatible RAID controller? by
@drian
Recently as some may have read, I have been having trouble getting XP to
boot onto a RAID 0 array, using the onboard RAID controller on my Intel
D875PBZ motherboard (ICH5-R). I have two SATA Western Digital (WD) Raptor
36GB drives, hooked up to the Serial ATA ports of my motherboard.
I created...

PCI RAID controller? by
@drian
Can anyone recommend a reliable, quick and feature-packed PCI RAID
controller for use with a pair of WD Raptor (WD360GD) drives? I cannot get
my Raptors to boot to Windows XP using a RAID 0 array with the ICH5-R on an
Intel 875PBZ motherboard.
Considering it refuses to boot the O.S., I've...

WD360 + Intel 875PBZ + XP Problem by
@drian
I have installed two Western Digital Raptor 36GB drives on a test machine.
They connected via Serial ATA cables to an Intel 875PBZ motherboard. Intel
RAID is enabled. I have setup a RAID 0 array with 128Kb stripe.
Basically, I go through this sequence:
a) XP boots off the CD drive
b) I press F6...

I'm new to the board, as I'm having some problems with a hard drive and

Samsung 1TB drives? by
A. J. Moss
Is there any reason for me to be suspicious
or worried about using the Samsung HD103UJ?
I've seen no hard evidence against them, but
they are the only drives on the market with
more than 250GB/platter (a third more, in
fact), and they've entered the market quite
late and at a very low price.
I...

WD5000AAKB hard drives. Why so cheap? by
A. J. Moss
I've been looking at a number of UK online retailers, and their prices
for Western Digital WD5000AAKB (500GB, 16MB cache, PATA) hard disks
all seem to be about 10% less than those for other 500GB disks,
including the WD5000AAJB (8MB cache). Have any reliability issues been
reported for these drives...

Optimising speed of RAID-0 (mixed SATA/PATA) by
A. J. Moss
I have an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard, and I want to create
3TB of, let's call it temporary space, on a single NTFS partition.
(By temporary, I mean the contents are replaceable from the source
data in the event of a disk crash, and the source data is safely
backed up; so RAID-0 will...

Replacing five WD2000JB drives by
A. J. Moss
I bought five Western Digital WD2000JB PATA hard disks four weeks ago.
One of them fails to format fully in Windows 2000, due to a large chunk
of bad sectors; another one has begun sticking - at random intervals it
makes a clunking noise, and no further disk access is possible without
cycling the...

Western Digital 320Gb hard drives? by
A. J. Moss
Western Digital WD3200JB (8M cache, but not the fancy RAID edition.)
Has anyone tried these? Can anyone comment on their reliability?
They cost about the same as a 300Gb drive (from any manufacturer),
and, all other things being equal, the extra 20Gb is worth having.

Restoring from Norton Ghost-Image by
a.fahrni
Restoring from Norton Ghost-Image
Intention:
1. Save a System-Partition to a ghost-image at point A.
2. fool around with the system (add new software etc.)
3. At point B restore system partition from ghost-image
Expectations:
the restored system is an exact copy as saved at point A.
