Installing IM on a Dell Workstation by
[email protected]
Some friends would like me to install Yahoo IM on a newly acquired
(and clean) Dell 670, but I'm hesitant because it may unnecessarily
pollute the OS. What are your feelings on Yahoo IM in terms of security
issues and OS bloat?

Studio XPS 435 by
Tom Lake
Well, it certainly has more expandability (24 GB RAM, 4.5 TB HD)
but it doesn't look like it has enough external 5.25" bays for me.

Optiplex 360 a quality system any more? by
[email protected]
I'm thinking of buying an Optiplex 360 system with 20"
flat screen on "Dell deals" section
I plan to use this as a base for a home built DVR as
well as general computing and maybe some light CAD work
are the Optiplex 360 units STILL well built? I was
reading some user remarks on Dell's web page...

Is the Mini 12 Going Away by
Dean-MN
Hi,
I read that Dell may discontinue the Mini 12. I am shopping for a
lightweight laptop and am considering the Mini 12 but if there's a problem
with it, the Mini 10 will do. There's a bunch of Mini 12s listed on the
Dell Outlet that I like. Is it not a good computer or what? Comments......

netbook's computing power? by
David Rothman
does anyone have a sense of the computing power of the current generations
of netbooks? how would they compare to say a celeron driven laptop of say 3
years ago?
i haven't played with one, but i asked a buddy to run a simple test: create
a folder of links to 10 newspapers (which typically...

XPS410 onboard NIC failure by
Bruno[_2_]
This morning the NIC suddenly failed on my XPS410. No hardware or
software changes have occurred in many months. Suddenly I got the tray
icon and it says I have limited or no connectivity.
If I open the Local Area Connection Status by clicking on the system
tray icon, the Activity shows packets...

The end of the desktop? by
Not Here[_3_]
On 1/13/2009 2:04 PM, BillW50 wrote: desktop too!
I use a laptop right now as a PVR with timeshifting (TiVo like). And
I can access it directly, or from another laptop. I personally can't
think of a reason why I need a desktop. In fact, my desktop has been
unplugged and sits in...

Bye Bye to PCI? by
Daddy[_3_]
Would it be correct to say that the PCI bus is now over and replaced by
PCIe?
So if manufacturers are still making PCI card devices, it's only to
accommodate owners of 'older' computers that use the PCI bus; and if
OEMs are building computers that still offer a PCI slot, it's only to...

Studio laptop video ? by
David Rothman
probably going to buy a Studio 13 or 15 laptop for my 15 year old son (not a
gamer). My guess is that he'll not need a video card, so i may use the
integrated graphics. that said, if we find it not powerful enough, can a
graphics card be added after the fact?

Third-party warranty for old Dell server? by
just bob
We have a server we will need for one more year and since it is more than
five years old Dell will not sell us maintenance contract (yes, that is one
more reason to use HP for servers).
Is there a third party you can recommend?
Thanks

Dell laptop battery suggestions - 75UYF by
ps56k
I'm looking for a couple of new Dell laptop batteries - 75UYF -
I had been getting the genuine Dell versions from a seller on eBay,
but he no longer is doing that - and has gone private and more expensive.
Over the years, I've had some of the other brands - but they didn't seem to
work as...

The good news: XPS420 with WinXP Pro SP3 and RAID1 now possible. by
S.Lewis[_3_]
I suspect someone much smarter than me somewhere slip-streamed SP3 into a CD
at some point and knows this already.
For me, I just booted the system from a Dell badged XP Pro SP3 disc to an
existing WinVista Home Premium system and it went w/o a hitch.
I then installed the Intel Storage Manager...

Need advise--AC Adapter problem by
MZB
I have an Inspiron 2200 laptop. The AC adapter sparks when I move it when it
is plugged into my laptop as there is a frayed wire (about an inch from
where it plugs into the computer).
It still charges the battery (it doesn't spark if I leave it alone).
So, I need to replace this part ASAP. Any...

The Optiplex 760 needs a BIOS revision. by
S.Lewis[_3_]
Until they come up with version A01, I would stay away.
Seems the Intel Q43/ICH10 has some 'kinks' not yet worked out.
Skipping/choppy video/audio from optical media, hard disk, or online
streaming (ie: youtube).
I'm sending the two I just bought back in favor of a couple of Opti 360's
