SATA vs SCSI by
Rob Nicholson
I know, that old chestnut :-) We're currently running a five year old Dell
PowerEdge 4400 server with 5 x 70GB Hitachi Ultra 160 SCSI drives in RAID-5
giving us ~280GB disk space. This server hosts our file share, SQL 7 and
Exchange 5.5 services.
But the time has come to plan for the future and...

Working on making a dual boot again, WinXP & Ubuntu by
Nehmo
From what I've read, it seems easier to use BootMagic than the
bootloader that comes with Windows. But I might be wrong. I don't know
this subject.
This is where I'm at now:
As you can see by this screenshot of Computer Management:

I'm running on WinXP...

Anyone hear about the exFAT file system, the successor to FAT32? by
Yousuf Khan
Came across this article the other day, it's a description of
Microsoft's latest FAT file system driver, meant mainly for use with the
newest generation of bigger thumb drives. It's called exFAT (extended),
and it's the successor to FAT32.
Description of the exFAT file system driver update...

The inferiority of Maxtor by
Ian
What is it with Maxtor internal IDE hard drives? This week is the
second time I had trouble with a Maxtor Diamond hard drive.
Here's the story:
When I attempted to access the folder in which the file I needed
was stored, Windows 2000 threw an "Error performing inpage
operation on hard disk" error...

Any Motherboards with two UDMA 133 or SATA slots by
Sam
Ok, so I have decided I NEED to get a new PC. My Promise controller is
not compatible with my ECS PVM4MM2 V5.0 MB (if someone knows a card that
is, that would be good).
I am leaning toward an Intel Based chipset either Asus, Abit or ? with
several PCI slots. Right now, I am looking for a MB...

Seagate 7200.11 High Failure Rate by
Tony[_7_]
I have gotten 5 drives and 4 of them failed within an hour. Yes, the
warranty replacements gotten directly from Seagate failed just like the
orginal 2 new ones purchased from an online retailer. One of the original
warranty replacements is still working, though I'm not really using it yet
other...

DLT or LTO or AIT for new tape drive? by
Lady Margaret Thatcher
I have a home LAN with about 20 GB online. As I get more into digital
photography and possibly even videos, I expect that amount of storage
can grow quite a lot in the next few years.
My current tape drive is 7/14 GB, and a full backup each month
requires about 4-5 media changes, counting the...

How to recover a crashed laptop hard disk (windows NTFS) by
Erica Eshoo
Does anyone know of freeware which can diagnose & recognize an already
crashed hard disk on an IBM laptop?
My kid's IBM laptop hard disk "stopped working" (it had been making noise,
he said).
- The IBM laptop would not boot no matter what I tried
- I put the laptop hard disk in a different working...

Using Drive Image to adjust space? by
Terry Pinnell
Following a major crash, my wife recently had a second 40GB HD
installed. Unfortunately, the installer took the simplest option of
making the whole new drive a single partition, instead of two of 8GB
and 32GB, as on the other drive. The organisation is therefore now as
follows:

Single-rail vs. multi-rail power supplies? by
Yousuf Khan[_2_]
I currently have a desktop with a Zalman 600W PS, it was a pretty nice
PS a few years ago when I got it, but now it looks like the system has
been upgraded and grown again, and I'm starting to see signs that it's
not producing enough power for the components anymore. So I'm looking at
the...

Is my new 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 HDD affected? by
Ant
Hello!
I recently bought a new 500 GB SATA Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
ST3500320AS before Christmas 2008 and started using it on the 27th (work
time: 17 days). I am worried if I need to upgrade its firmware or return
the drive after reading about high failure rates online. However, those
were 1...

drive keeps having partition problems by
[email protected]
I have a friend with a 250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA (in a Win
XP Pro machine) that's throwing weird partition issues at the drop of
a hat.
Last week, after the PC crashed in a game, the entire drive (3 primary
NTFS partitions) became inaccessible. Partition Magic 8 showed it as
one errored...

Cheap Enclosure for 4 IDE drives? by

I've got 4 80GB Drives that I'd like to redeploy in my house, but my
existing computers don't have any free IDE connexions, PCI slots, or drive
bays. I also don't want to create another complete PC in my house.
I've seen some IDE-raid enclosures, but they are all prohibitively expensive.
I've...

Spinrite by
Tom Del Rosso
I have a drive with bad sectors in the FAT area, so I thought of
Spinrite since it works at the low level, but they tell me that their
program can't fix it. I couldn't expect them to explain why, so I'll
ask here.
I had thought that Spinrite relocates sectors at the low level, and as
far as the...
