"Write-aside" disk drives--do they exist? by
Mxsmanic
It has occurred to me that one could build a completely malware-proof
PC by installed special disk drives that do not actually accept write
operations, but instead write them aside into a temporary area that is
deallocated each time the drive is reset. Has anyone ever built such
a drive?
The idea...

'corrupt master file table' error? by
Falco98
My roommate is running WinXP on 2 maxtor 120's, with one of them formatted
to about 30g / 90g (C and D respectively). Suddenly today, when he
restarted, XP threw him into the 'scandisk' mode for "consistency errors" on
D:, and shortly after it begins the scandisk, it says something like,
"Master...

'defrag' memory by

Do these 'memory optimizers' actually do any good or are they a waste
of time (like 'registry cleaners')?

'Open' ATX Case? by
[email protected]
Hello,
I am looking for one of those computer chassis that is completely open.
It's stainless steel, sits on its side, and has no panels. You can just
reach in and touch a component. I have no idea what these are called, I
just remember seeing one once. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

'software' or 'hardware' modem? by
Jin
Hi;
I live in a very rural area, and can only connect
to the internet via modem.
The connection here rarely ever goes over 28,800
(I have no other noise on the lines).
Can anyone tell me what kind of modem is better:
a ISA or a PCI?
And, does anyone know how to tell if a modem is a

'Sound on board' by
reg
Hi
I have been offered a HP PIII 1000ghz system.
It has 'On-board-sound'.
I recall some time ago reading that this was not upgradeable.
Will I be able to replace or upgrade HP's 'on-board' if necessary?

(OT) Spam question? by
Xeno Chauvin
Outside of my having a bad provider, perhaps, how is it
I receive spam that is in NO WAY addressed to me?
When I check properties/message details I cannot find
my name anywhere. I do find a name @ my same provider but NOT MY name.
Since my spam as increased 1000% in the last week
I am concerned.

(Probably a rehash of the same old story...) Power slurpee size? by
nobody >[_2_]
I'm doing a new build 'pooter with some new stuff and some stuff that's
been kicking around.
The intent is decent performance but *quiet*, cool, and reasonably cheap.
Most of my use will be "light load". I no longer "chase the Holy Grail
of Maximum Frame Rates", I can't twitch fast enough for...

(Software Driven) Transputer. by
Skybuck Flying[_4_]
Hello,
Here is an idea for futher exploration, it may become the future of
computing in the far future, but perhaps it has some merit today.
The "Software Driven" transputer is the most purest form of computing
possible.
The word transputer in this case is not derived from "transistor" and...

(stumble bumbled) fix for logitech trackman finally by
Flasherly[_2_]
Well, almost. Got the thing apart, found the 'Hidden Screw' I'd
missed before. Microswitches almost look generically orderable, well
marked w/brand &etc. Four microswitches, 2 to a side, regrettably,
on non-swappable PCB (left switch boards don't fit the right, viz a
viz &etc). That means:...

(Ubee) Cable modem acting strange all of a sudden. (Reset fixed it). by
Skybuck Flying[_4_]
Today I noticed something strange (couple of minutes ago), 3 march 2016 at
14:50.
I was about to start computering/internetting.
Googling (and facebooking and linked-in something I rarely do).
I noticed the connection was very slow. Websites would load very slow or not
at all.
