(Repaired) Toshiba Laptop Satellite L670 performing poorly (No HD Speed Information ?!? Weird IBM stuff) by Skybuck Flying[_4_]
Hallo, A few days ago I was at my mother's place. I noticed her laptop was infuriatingly slow. It was a Toshiba Satellite L670. It used to be fast, I was also under the impression that it was a kinda fast and expensive laptop.

co-processor by philo
I repaired a mini-pc running Win7 (32bit) and it's running well but in the control panel it shows no driver for co-processor. The CPU is an Intel quad core Atom 330 Intel has no such driver on their website (as far as I could determine) and their driver update tool found nothing missing.

PSU or video card? by [email protected]
Apologies for posting via Google but I'm desperate. I replaced my mobo yesterday with an Asus M5A97 LE, no onboard graphics. PSU is 585W, video is Radeon HD 6770. Fans spin up fine without the video card, but when I plug it in, the fans start cycling up/down and I have no display. I've been beating...

Motherboard Advice Needed by Bob Simon[_2_]
A friend who runs a small business asked me to help her make her Compaq 100B PCs run faster. It turns out they have plenty of RAM but a very slow processor that appears to be soldered directly to the motherboard. Since this system does not have an internal power supply, I presume she will need a...

Does Intel sell processors/chipsets without AMT/ME/SMM ? by Skybuck Flying[_4_]
Hello, Here a question from a girly (not me): Does Intel sell (recent) chipsets/processors without AMT/ME/SMM ? I like to add to that: Without JAVA/ThreadX/RTOS ? I think these technologies are unnecessary for home/desktop computers and form an unnecessary security/privacy risk !

New HD? by philo
A friend wants me to add a new SATA HD to his system. He's a photographer, so it will be used for storing hi-res images. Have not ordered in a while and now I see there are so many options. Just wondering why some drives are marketed as being for NAS, security systems, etc

Socket 771 Xeon in Socket 775? by ~misfit~[_16_]
I've been trying to do this using a 'modded' Xeon that I bought from AliExpress (essentially has one of those stickers micro-glued in place and cut down so it's just over the two transposed lands and has a second set of grooves cut in periphery to fit socket). I've tried it in two mobos now, at...

HD? by philo
I have a friend with a 500Gig external ATA drive. USB2 He says that when he plugs it into his machine he often has to try twice before Windows recognizes it. I had him copy all data off the drive, then I took it with me to determine if the problem is with the electronics in the enclosure or the...

(Skylake) Intel® Core i7-6700K (4.0 to 4.2 ghz 95 watts) vs Intel® Core i7-6700T (2.8 to 3.6 ghz 35 watts) by Skybuck Flying[_4_]
Hello, I was considering the T version of Intel's Skylake processor. However it seems unavailable, maybe/perhaps there is a reason for it. Maybe the T version is just not so great. What interests me about the T version is the low TDP of 35 watts. However the clock frequency is only 2.8 GHz per...

Youtube nerd claim: intel 4 core + 4 fake/hyper cores, beats AMD 6 core ? by Skybuck Flying[_4_]
Hello, I just saw a funny nerd/nerd video on youtube. The somewhat cute/shy nerd claims that an intel 4 core + 4 fake/hyper cores can beat amd 6 core. (4 fake cores being hyper threading). Now the nerd is not showing any benchmarks or anything... but his hypothesis

More ramblings... by philo
Right after I posted about how I thought it foolish that a Mac I worked on did not report a SMART error... I was working on a PC that one minute died and the next, the drive was dead. No SMART error was reported. The conclusion: Everything will fail.

Android for my Acer Aspire One by Norm X
Hi, This message is X-posted to alt.comp.hardware & comp.mobile.android. My Acer Aspire One netbook no longer boots. In one case I blame Microsoft. I used update on my Win7 partition and now, no matter what I do, I end up with a blue screen. In another case, I messed up the drivers on the...

I am not going to recommend a Mac to anyone by philo
Guy brought over a non-bootable iMac. He did not care so much if I could fix it as he did about his (of course) not backed up data. Popped it in my Linux machine as a 2nd drive and immediately got a SMART error.

Replace LCD CCFL Backlight with LEDs. by ~misfit~[_16_]
Has anyone done this? My beloved Dell 2007FP (20" 4:3 UXGA IPS) monitor is getting dim. I've been having to use it on full brightness for a while now and even then it's not bright and takes a while to reach full brightness, maybe 15 seconds. I'm not rich but could swing a few hundred for a new...
