advice requested for first time builder by
Aarflow
first off I'd like to thank everyone in advance for their tips. My
budget is somewhere around $1500 give or take. I want mainly a gaming
machine, but I plan on getting a digital camera later though. Here's
what I was looking at so far:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3400. Is it better to get OEM or...

SCSI Fastest? by
Aaron
I was pondering the other day why gaming systems and other rigs built
for speed never have SCSI drives in them. Isn't a 15,000rpm drive
with a higher bandwidth connection (I'm not sure exactly what it's
called, U320 or something?) going to be faster than any SATA 10,000rpm
drive? Maybe there is a...

Linux Messes Things Up by
Aaron
Well, the subject says it...
I have installed Mandrake Linux 10.0 successful on my second
harddrive, and can run it, but can no longer boot Windows ME from my
primary IDE disk. In fact, when I try to use a boot disk, there are
no harddrives shown on the primary drive. I believe the...

Floppy Drive Cable by
Aaron
Well, I got my computer moved into its acrylic case, but I have one
problem. I can't figure out which way I should plug the floppy drive
cable in. When I power up with it in one way, the drive's light stays
on all the time, and it doesn't work. When I flip the cable around on
the drive end, I...

Huge Image File by
Aaron
Is it possible for me to open a 935MB image file on my Pentium II
266MHz computer with 128MB RAM? I have plenty of harddrive space, so
virtual memory could be used, right?
By the way, the file is a thermal image map of a river.

Acrylic Case Thermal Performance by
Aaron
Are there any weird thermal issues that come with a completely acrylic
case (all material is transparent)? One kid at school said cases are
aluminum for heat dissipation, but I think he was a little loony.
I suppose if I sat it in direct sunlight it would be like a
greenhouse. Things might not...

PS and CD-ROM Only - Possible? by
Aaron
Has anyone ever tried this or know why it wouldn't work?
Take an old power supply, and connect it to a CD-ROM drive, being
careful to keep everything grounded, of course. Could you then put an
audio CD in and connect the line out on the back of the drive to a
line in on a stereo?
Also, there is...
