On the brink of madness... by
I.C. Koets
I have a problem that quite frankly baffles me, so I might not tell it right
since I have no clue what is actually going on.
I built myself a new PC:
Asus P5GD1 motherboard (Intel 915P chipset)
2 WD harddisks, a NEC dvd/cd rw
Nvidia GeForce 6200 video card (PCIx)
Hauppauge WinTV Go! TV card

Thermal pad or Thermal paste? by
Vin
hey there,
after some excessive amount of case modding to fit 4 additional
suckholes/blowholes (3 in the side case blowing IN and 1 on top of case
blowing OUT), i've finally managed to bring my case temperatures under
control -- about 6C above the room ambient (ambient is 28C, case is 34C).
But my...

So what if thermal compound spreads? by

What exactly is the problem if too much cpu compound is put on the

Apart from looking messy, is there any real problem with this?
If you put on so much that the compound squashes out past the edges,
that's too...

Correct angle for keyboard by
Archie
Is there a generally-accepted best angle for the slope of a regular
keyboard? One web page says this:

"angle of the keyboard relative to the angle of the wrist. Most
keyboards slope upwards from front to back, and this means that users

How detect if MP3 player is recording in your room? [OT] by
Joey
Suppose someone visited your office or home and tried to make a voice
recording using a hidden recorder.
If they used a older-style dictation machine based on tape then you
could detect the electromagnetic transmissions from the dictation
machine when it was recording.
But how would you detect...

What wears out in an HDD? by
Micky
What wears out in an HDD? Is it only the tone arm that breaks? or
can the bearings the platter rides on break??? Good watches use
jewels, rubies, as bearings; and cheap watches use metal. What do
hard drives use?
I googled but couldn't find much about this. Does the spindle really

AMD64 or Semperon, deal or no deal? by
Tad Confused
I have been weighing up the value of these two processors
in a new system. It seems to me the two processors have
fairly similar performances in most situations but that an
AMD64 system is considerably more expensive at about
£100 - £150 more (not so easy to compare as other items
