Homebuilt PC occasionally BSODs, how to diagnose by
Bob Fry
I recently built a PC, my first one:
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4200+; stock heatsink and fan
- ABIT NF-M2 nView mobo
- No video card, using onboard video
- NZXT LEXA-NP case (Three 120mm fans, two blowing in, one blowing
out)
- 2GB DDR2 800MHz Super Talent T800UX2GC4 memory (no ECC, running...

EPP memory question for MoBo which doesn't support it by
Bob Fry
I'm building a system for the first time and have a question about
Enhanced Profile Performance (EPP) memory. In particular I'm looking
at the Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C3, though I think my question applies
to any EPP memory.
Corsair's spec sheet for the above product says:
SPD programmed...

Stock cpu fan and heatsink on AMD Athlon dual-core x64 by
Bob Fry
I have a homebuilt pc with the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4200+ (AM2
socket), cooled by the stock heatsink and fan that comes with the cpu.
The stock fan has no mobo controlled speed, though the mobo supports
such (Abit NF-M2 nView). Though it doesn't run hot at all, I'd like
to replace just the...

Athlon 3400+ running slow? by
Bob Robertson
Hey guys, I upgraded my system this weekend from an XP 2000+ to an A64
3400+ and gigabyte motherboard. I ran some games and didn't see a huge
difference so I decided to run 3dmark on it (BTW I have a 6600GT which I
would have thought would be cpu limited with the XP2000+). The 3dmark
score is...

How can I tell if my CPU suppurts hardware virtualization? by
Bob Smith[_3_]
Hello, I want to use my Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS PCI
card using windows XP mode. The onboard sound wont let me do 5.1
analog speakers (just 7.1 which I don't have), Creative Labs Sound
Blaster Audigy 2 ZS can do 5.1. but windows reps say my CPU must
support hardware virtualization...

CPU frequency keeps changing under XP by
Bob Smith[_3_]
When I go to my computerproperties the CPU report is never
consistent. it should report 3.11 GHz. but when I refresh it , it
drops to 1.9 GHz then 777 Mhz, then back to 3.11 GHz.
How can I fix this so Windows reports my CPU constant @ 3.11 GHz?
TIA!!!

pshufb by
[email protected]
For some reason, the pshufb instruction does not work on my
AMD Athlon 64. I tried it in 32 bit mode, and I get an illegal
instruction message from Windows.

Will winMe work on AMD64 by
BobV
I tried to build a new system using a ESC mobo with AMD64 cpu and could
not get winMe to complete the instal.
The system would install winXP and Ubuntu(64bit) just fine.
I trashed the mobo, but would like to try again with a different make mobo.
Is there any incompatibility with winMe and 64bit...

Will the first AM2 chips support quad processing? by
Boe
I am planning on building a new system soon. I've seen mention of having 2
dual core chips from AMD and Intel effectively giving you quad processing.
I haven't seen any info on if the first release chips from either company
support this with a new motherboard chipset or if a totally different CPU...

AMD and ATI? by
Boe
There have been a few posted rumors about ATI buying ATI. I'd rather see
AMD take Creative - then maybe we'd see real on board sound - audigy 2
chipset or an audigy 2 PCI express sound card.

Any Nero Vision speed comparisons? by
Boe
Hello,
Tom's hardware is often helpful for CPU comparisons but one of the tools I
use most often to convert AVI or MPG to DVD is Nero Vision. I haven't seen
any AMD vs. Intel comparisons for this. Since this is probably about the
most CPU intensive thing I do, an actual lab comparison would be...

Any motherboards supporting x2, crossfire and 8 rear usb ports? by
Boe
Hello,
I'm thinking about building a new system in about 1 month. I'd like a good
motherboard that can support x2 939, crossfire, has 8 rear usb ports and
preferably has 2 gigabit nics on board. I see many that have 4 front and 4
rear usb but I'd like one with 8 usb rear and the only systems...

Info about the new chips coming shortly? by
Boe
Hello,
A link was sent about the new AMD chips coming out next month and I'm very
curious. Has Tom's or anyone done any reviews of the x2 5000 AM2 or any of
the other chips. I realize they won't hit the street for another month but
often reviews are available in advance.
Thanks

Any news on what will replace the x2 4800 and when? by
Boe
Hello,
I am anxious to build my next system but am waiting until I can't take my
current system any more. Compiling videos on my system is a tad slow. I'm
hoping I can hold out until about September. Any word on what is coming out
from AMD? I figure with Intel's announcement of the faster and...

Questions about 65 nm processors by
Boe
Hello,
I see a lot of mentions about the new 65 nm processors that AMD may have out
by the end of the year but haven't heard too much about why I should wait.
They may be something well worth waiting for but haven't seen much about
what they will offer.
First and most important - will they be...

Games that take advantage of 64 bit and/or dual core CPUs? by
boe
Hello,
I figure the gaming people on this forum might know. Since Intel and AMD
are
releasing dual core processors now(I'm not referring to dual core gpus), I
was curious if there are any games that take advantage of dual core
processors or motherboards with two processors?
Also if there is a...
