question about PSU and heat inside a case by
Yes[_2_]
Roughly, what percentage of the heat inside a case is generated by the
PSU?
Have manufacturers tried to move the PSU to a stand-alone external unit
to reduce cooling requirements inside a case and/or provide more room
for other stuff inside the case?
These questions arose because I was looking at...

Problems with driver software.
First tried installing Kensington's, but screwy results. First off
couldn't even swap/reverse the buttons;- key assignments,
customization, nor much else worked.
Uninstalled Logitech's drivers. Mouse stopped working.

Where do old computers go to die? by
Nil
I have 5 or 6 old computer carcasses in my basement. Most of them are
AT form factor cases and motherboards, Pentium CPUs, small IDE disk
drives. Obsolete stuff that I can't think of any use for. Most of them
still work, or would with a little work.
What should I do with this junk? I don't...

Windows 10? Who will upgrade from Win 8, from Win 7, from XP this month? by
RayLopez99
I decided on my 'throwaway' PC, which I use for coding and gaming (for fun, not my day job), which is a modern quad core running Windows 8.1, I will upgrade to Win 10 later this month and for the first time I will not do a 'clean install' but 'upgrade'. I do this to take advantage of the 'free...

stupid PC needs reset to boot by
[email protected]
I have an old Core 2 PC, which I have been keeping because it has
a software package that can't be transferred to another machine.
Now when I turn it on, just hear the DVD drive grunt. No beep, no
monitor, no keyboard lights.
But if I then hit reset button, behold it will boot okay.
Tried removing...

Neat heatshrink tubing soldering tip by
Flasherly[_2_]
You've got super-fine needle nose pliers that will inversely open,
backwards quite wide, right?
Well, then...proceed to stick both plier extensions into some
heatshrink tubing, opening the pliers forcefully (just don't break
your precision tools) to stretch the tube as far as you reasonably...

Does Intel sell processors/chipsets without AMT/ME/SMM ? by
Skybuck Flying[_4_]
Hello,
Here a question from a girly (not me):
Does Intel sell (recent) chipsets/processors without AMT/ME/SMM ?
I like to add to that: Without JAVA/ThreadX/RTOS ?
I think these technologies are unnecessary for home/desktop computers and
form an unnecessary security/privacy risk !

Anything different backing up an SSD vs. an HDD with Macrium Reflect? by
Brassplyer
I tried backing up a 240 gb SSD drive for the first time with Macrium and found that the image shows up as two partitions even though I never deliberately created two partitions. One is 100 mb the other is 223.47 gb. I recently did a reinstall of Win7 x64 Home Premium and downloaded various...

Mouse click no longer waking computer by
Bill[_36_]
Recent problem. The Window 7 computer no longer wakes by mouse click. I
have a Logitech g5 USB mouse. The power button does still wake the computer.
I checked, and the option to "wake by mouse" is still selected. I
haven't changed anything (myself)!
I assume this may be due to a recent windows...

Anybody ever tried a GPT to MBR system disk conversion? by
Larc[_3_]
There are apparently ways to do it without losing data. Several utilities claim the
ability, AOMEI Partition Assistant for one. A friend has a Lenovo laptop with a GPT
disk. It would be nice if he could reclaim the space used by the extra partitions
needed for GPT. I made the switch with my...

Can't access router used as access point by
Seymore4Head
I took an extra linksys router and reconfigured it as an access point.
I assigned it 192.168.1.2. The main router has a network map and it
shows a device on 192.168.1.2, but when I enter 192.168.1.2 in my
browser it doesn't log on to the access point. I get a timeout error.
The router works as...

mainboard won't give memory range to PCI card by
[email protected]
I had to setup a wireless network; I usually stick to ethernet cabling.
Go through box of spare parts. Tried a D-link card, but Windows 7 does
not support it. Apparently particular card will flip out to the BSOD
if you force to use older XP/Vista drivers.
Then try a TP-LINK, what is Win7...
