Rip-off artists by
aether
That sums up the entire industry. The prices aren't coming down. The
prices have remained the same for the past six months. They pay cheap
laborers in Asia a few cents an hour to manufacture this hardware, and
then turn around and make a 1000% profit. I'd love to see this turned
on them. (e.g. mass...

Why are mainboard boxes already opened? by
John Doe
Considering the fact a mainboard is a very complex part of a
computer that you would want to know is factory fresh, how come
mainboard boxes are not factory sealed?
If that's because configuring has to be done after the factory, how
come the company that configures the thing does not seal the...

CPU Cooler designs? by
Gerry_uk
Hi,
As I understand it, most ATX style PC setups have a fan above the CPU
that blows air down onto the CPU to keep it cool, and the hot air
bounces around inside the PC case until it can find an exit (if it's lucky).
As I see it, there are two problems with this,
a) unless you have a vent in...

Hi,
I'm experiencing problems with Intel Core 2 E6800 temperatures on my
ASUS mainboard, but part of the problem is I don't even know if the
values I'm seeing reported on screen are correct or not!
I've created a quick web page with a screen shot and details...

cannot power "on" ASUS laptop after power outage by
Adam
System: ASUS N61JQ (laptop)
Host OS: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
After a power outage yesterday, pressing the power button of
ASUS laptop does nothing. The laptop was/is connected to
an APC battery backup (surge protection only) outlet (via AC adapter).
AC adapter's green light is "on".
Any ideas?

Many people ordering BIOS chips for A8N32-SLI Deluxe by
Skybuck
Hello,
I am definetly not the only one with probably a dead BIOS chip for the
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard. (Confirmed by third party bios
flashing service)
Let's recap:
1. Asus sells a motherboard with a bios version which does not
completely support 4 GB.

Help! Major Memory Installation Issue by

This actually refers back to a thread I started several days ago under a different ID where I asked about adding memory to the M3A motherboard.
I updated that thread again a few minutes ago because of the major problem I encountered. I wanted to update it again but Google Groups is not letting me...

Does Dell make its own motherboards? by

Do all Dell PCs (for the UK market) come with Dell's own

I am thinking of getting a Dell but I don't want to find that it uses
a Dell proprietary motherboard that may have little technical data
available.
ISTR hearing that Dell used a non-standad wiring on...

Avoid Circuit City by
MikeW
This is unbelievable. IMO, Avoid Circuit City at all costs after what they
just pulled on me.
I went in on Monday to buy an HP Notebook model ZX5160. They were offering
an additional $250 off and with a $100 rebate the price was $1199.
I saw their model ZX5040US for $199 after rebates. That has a...

64-bit or 32-bit: When will it matter? by
aether
Building a computer from scratch. It'll be built for someone who'll use
it for alot of things, but tilted in the 'gaming' direction. Should
whether the processor is 64-bit or 32-bit matter? If not, when? If so,
how so? In other words, should I go AMD or Intel? I understand AMD is
slightly faster...

Life expectancy by
Travis King
What's probably the life expectancy of my A7V333 motherboard if I take good
care of it? It has 2 years on it right now. I run the computer for the
most part constantly except when I leave town or do something with the
inside of the computer. Current MB temperature is at 30 C.

UPS Recommendations? by
(PeteCresswell)
Have had an APC "Back UPS XS 1500" for several years.
It works, but it seems to me like APC is selling batteries. To wit, the thing's
software started telling me it was replacement time and "helpfully" pointing me
to APC's battery sales site.
Went down to Radio Shack instead and got a couple of...

Gigabyte or Abit or Asus by
Colonel Blip
Hello, All!
I'm interested in getting a 939 socket m/b and an Athlon64 3000+. I've
always been an Asus m/b person, but thought I would at least test the waters
on views of the Asus vs. other m/b's. Any views on 'best' of these three
manufactures for socket 939?
Thanks.

RAID 0 is usually a foolish choice for desktops by

If more proof of this old contention is needed, there's a cutting-edge
review by Anand Shimpi on AnandTech.com:

As always in these tests, the real-world improvement achieved with
RAID 0 varies between 0 and 4%, which is simply imperceptible. ...

New Theory: AMD's CPU Throttling damaged the power supply. by
Skybuck Flying[_2_]
Hello,
I have a new theory how the power supply got damaged:
AMD's X2 3800+ dual core processor has CPU Throttling.
I downloaded a special AMD Software tool called AMD Power Monitor or
something like that.
Which throttles back the CPU when it's idling... then when it needs to do
