When I tried to install it, I got nothing. Power is flowing to the board
becuase the fans spin and the power light is lit, but no beep codes and
video. Tried removing various components and still nothing. Video and

Can a voltage drop affect a computer? by

I just set up an air conditioner in the same room as my computer. I've noticed that whenever the air conditioner turns on, the light in my room dims for a split second and then goes back to normal. The computer, lamp, and air conditioner are all plugged into different electrical socket...

PSU load tester by
Skeleton Man
Hi all,
I'm soon to be reviewing a new 750W psu but I don't have anything for load..
I have seen heavy mention of wire wound power resistors of 'various values'
but no mention of what those values are. I can get various load resistors
of around 100ohm/10W from ebay.. but oviously 100ohm isn't...

HP Pavilion 533w, pooping... by
Grinder
I have an HP Pavilion 533w, with a Trigem Glendale mainboard, that has 9
leaky caps:

I'm a patient, if not terribly skilled, solderer. Can this be fixed, or
is the mainboard most likely a frisbee at this point?

I want to build a new computer for my father in law. He now has a 7 or 8
year old Best Buy something or other. The monitor, speakers, and keyboard
are ok, so we just need to get him a new system and optical mouse. My son
and I have built several systems in the past, but the last was about 2...

320GB: Deskstar T7K500 or Caviar SE16 ? by
Joe S
I hear that the Barracuda's could be better and that the Samsung T133
models are nothing like as good as models from their previous range.
OTOH Deskstar T7K500 and WD SE16s seem better thought of.
Some people have said that the Western Digital's are usually unreliable
but the SE16's seem to be...

Iraq Less Violent than Washington, D.C. by

Iraq Less Violent than Washington, D.C.
Despite media coverage purporting to show that escalating violence in
Iraq has the country spiraling out of control, civilian death
statistics complied by Rep. Steve King, R-IA, indicate that Iraq
actually has a lower civilian violent death rate than...

Hardware problem - please help! by
Neil Hindry
I wonder if you can help me.
For some reason yesterday my desktop PC's tower unit lost power; I don't
know what happened as I wasn't by my PC when it happened, and now I cannot
turn it on. Unfortunatley I have a disk in my DVD drive that I need to get
out.
I have been lead to believe that there...

Hello, My CD-ROM (D:) drive isn't working. It won't run any CDs, and reads

having one file. I use Windows XP. And have searched various help guides for
the answer, and tried different things, but...

The whole surreal story
So at 6:30am on January 14th, I woke up to the doorbell buzzing. Not a
short lived buzz. Someone had their thumb pressing the button and holding
it there. "****ing drunkard" I thought, and rolled over,...

Avoid Circuit City by
MikeW
This is unbelievable. IMO, Avoid Circuit City at all costs after what they
just pulled on me.
I went in on Monday to buy an HP Notebook model ZX5160. They were offering
an additional $250 off and with a $100 rebate the price was $1199.
I saw their model ZX5040US for $199 after rebates. That has a...

Sorry for the x post but I am in deep sh*t....
I posted earlier today and asked under a topic of 'Slower

combined 64 pc100 and 128mb pc133 memory...
Well to cut a long story short I gave it a go and put in the 2 x 128mb...

Corrupt NTFS Filesystem by
Bob
Almost every time I reboot my Win2K/SP4 system, CHKDSK runs because
Win2K detected a "corrupt ntfs filesystem" on the boot disk. Every
once in a while I get a BSOD instead, in which case I have to move the
bad disk to D: and run CHKDSK manually from inside Win2K.
In both instances CHKDSK fixes the...

Extra flexible main lead by
Alex Coleman
Is it possible to get more flexible 13 Amp mains lead to replace those
leads which hardly seem to bend?
I guess that these "inflexible flexes" are made of tough version of PVC
and contain and fewer but larger individual wires in the cores.
Presumably having fewer cores is a cheaper way to make a...

How do I get rid of a drive letter? by
Victor
I once had a CDR drive and a CDRW drive. Now I only have the latter.
The CDR drive still shows up in 'My Computer' etc and ties up a drive
letter of course. How do I remove it? I no longer need it and would
like to get rid of it.
Thanks

Power supply hot to touch by
Skeleton Man
Hi All,
I just took the side of my case to improve CPU temps and noticed two things:
1) The PSU is very hot. I mean to the point of burning your hand almost (as
is the exhaust air from the back).
2) I think the fan on the bottom is blowing hot air into the case, not out.
Removing the side...
