Getting there by Norm Why[_2_]
This is a continuation of an old thread: Paul suggested I try an Intel E4700 CPU. So far I have only acquired a couple of Intel E4800 CPU(s), TDP 65 W. I cannot feel heat emitted, like with Intel Q9650 CPU. With it, PC would try to boot 3 times then give up. Now it tries forever, but gives...

How do you get pubic hairs out of a keyboard? by Pezbollah
I tried vacuuming them with a little handheld vac from radio shack but they are stuck poking out from between the keys. Any way to get them out of there without taking the back off the keyboard?

can this hard drive be saved? by J Lunis
Have (had?) a Maxtor 80G external USB hard drive connected to my XP PC. A few days ago I found it was no longer recognized by the PC. Maxtor suggested unplugging the USB cable and power to the HD, waiting 10 seconds and plugging the power back in. I waited hours. Plugged it back in but it didn't...

I need a new inkjet by Pete
Hi all I'm in the UK looking for a new inkjet printer that has low running costs. Obviously Lexmarks are out as there are no compatible catridges. What's the situation with HP? I was looking at the Epson R265 as Epson are doing a rebate in this at the moment but there don't seem to be any...

Any fellow binary addicts|? :-) by [email protected]
I just love to zip out to the binary newsgroups, set 3-4 big ones to download, and harvest some 20,000+ files in a few hours on my DSL line. The problem is, my dual Mac G4 Net computer invariably crashes afterwards, needing disk repair. Directories are garbled, often entire HDs disappear. Possibly...

KVM switch for DVI by _DD
I'm looking for a 2-channel or 4-channel KVM switch for use with DVI video. 1600x1200 resolution would be good. 1920x1200 would be even better. Any recommendations for models or brands?

EIDE (Enhanced IDE) vs IDE by David Fairbrother
What is EIDE? I am thinking of replacing a hard drive in my old (old, old old, 1996 PC) and it's - like most HDD's of its vintage - IDE. I have seen an "EIDE" hard drive from Western Digital advertised with my local IT company. Would this use the same connectors/be compatible with this old...

Can a nearby refrigerator affect PC performance? by mandygal
I have a PC with terrible performance that defies troubleshooting. I may be grabbing a straws here, but the PC shares a wall (and electrical circuits) with a refrigerator - could that have any impact? Performance issue is ridiculously slow to process - logging on, opening files, opening...

Monitor Grainy; VideoCard Needed? by Elle
I have a one-year-old Samsung 712n SyncMaster flat monitor. It's been grainy pretty much from the get-go. I have adjusted and experimented with the settings many times. Still, much of the time the display is grainy. Seems to come and go. Can someone please advise on whether some sort of video...

USB cable and its use by ritter197
I have a desktop and a laptop, both with Windows XP and fairly fast GHZ CPU's. I have followed the instructions very carefully and in the device manger I see on both computers the Bridge USB. Yet, when I click on the desktop icon for PCConnect it does bring up the PCLinq (that's how they spell...

Is HT a waste of cpu time by Michael C
I was running a single threaded long process on a HT P4 last night and noticed that it only used effectively one fake cpu. The result was the actual usage sat at 50% which looked like a big waste of cpu time to me. Would it be better to have HT turned off? Is it any use in general?

Theoretical water cooling idea by Brad
Aside from the obviously large amount of space being taken up... Could a water cooler, (like the common free standing 4-5ft tall including huge water jug) be used as a water cooler for a standard home computer ? Later considerations of saving space whether its set it in the my spare room and run...

64 bit processors by [email protected]
I have a question about the line of true 64 bit processors. When they are running 32 bit software, do they take the instructions, data, etc. 2 blocks at a time or is there half of the cpu that is not being used?? Where this is leading, is to the question is it better to have a super hi speed...

CPU Temperature by Nel
I'm certain that my CPU (P4 3.06gHz) is running far too hot and is the cause of my unstable PC. The manufacturer claims the temp is normal for this type of system - which is more like a laptop than a desktop, as the motherboard and cards are built in behind the TFT screen and the hardrive is built...

The life of a hard drive? by Ablang
How long are hard drives supposed to last anyway (in your experience)? I know some probably have an MTBF of about 30 years, but I had a WD 6.x GB HD that just became as good as dead a few weeks ago (too many bad sectors; scandisk ran forever). So tell me about the bad ones in your life? -- "All...
