More details about 32-way Horus chipset for Opteron by
Yousuf Khan
Looks like Newisys is using a directory-based cache coherency chip to take
Opterons beyond their 4- or 8-way internal limitations. The people who
designed this chipset seem to be the same people who designed IBM's Summit
chipset for Xeon.
There's also some interesting chatter about why IBM chose...

Bios problem with Asus A8V by
no spam
Hello,
I have an Asus A8V (revision 1.02) with an AMD64 3500+ CPU. My boot drive
is a WD Raptor (36gig) configured to run off one of the VIA Sata connectors.
I also have a standard IDE Seagate 160gig connected to the IDE 1 port as
well as two 160gig Sata Seagates configured as RAID 0 running off...

If you were to rate motherboards.... by
Rich
....say 6 brands from best to worse, what would the list look like? Not
individual boards, but overall brand ratings themselves. I've only
ever used Asus and Soyo boards but I'd be interested
in people's opinions.

1 or 2 MB cache - how much performance difference? by
GTS
Building a budget PC and ordered an OEM AMD X2 5600 2Mb cache (2x1mb)
ADA5600IAA6CZ
BUT Ebuyer have sent me an OEM cpu that is not even listed on their website:
ADO5600IAA6DO
The one they sent only has 1mb (2x512kb) cache. So what difference will I
noitice - is it worth RMA'ing?
There are other...

Phenom 9850 Temperature Control by
Peter van der Goes[_2_]
Please share your solutions. My 9850 is running at 2.7 GHz with CPU voltage
set to 1.175V.
In a well-ventilated case (25C), SpeedFan reports CPU at 54 - 56C with very
little activity (web surfing, email, etc.)
No, I haven't run a full-on stress test for fear of the obvious.
I'm using a...

True Speed for Athlon CPU's? by
bitsbucket
COprocessors went the way of the Dodo bird.........do you mean "processors"?
If so, and if you are seeing the low numbers, and the bios supports the AMD
processors, then you have the FSB set wrong.(too low) My 2500+ shows 2500+
at boot. As a matter of fact, I have it overclocked to 3200+ and it...

Pretty Good Experience Building New PC by
Steven O.
Hi, all. Since there are postings here all the time with questions
about what kind of system to put together, I thought I'd share my
pretty good experience. After tons of research, I realized I had no
idea exactly which parts to buy, so I went to a local computer store,
MicroCenter, and worked...

AMD Nomenclature? by
Adjacent
OK, I can't find it on AMD's website, but someone has to know. I understand
that the higher numbers i.e. 2800, 3000, 3200, etc. are increasingly better,
but what does it mean. I see that most of these have the same clockspeeds,
but the higher numbers (2800,3200...) cost more, so they must be...

original Phenoms and the TLB bug-- still good enough? by
Darren Garrison
Anyone running Phenom "1" processors that have the TLB bug? Is it obscure
enough that you can still use the CPU without typically running into it?
I ask because I had been planning on waiting until around the end of the year
and seeing what prices were like on Phenom II quads to do a drop-in...

Need CPU/MB recommendation by

My current trusty box, an Asus A7N8-Deluxe with an Athlon XP2600
Barton core has started locking up with various bus errors. I've
swapped out every part I can to isolate the problem and nothing is
helping, which leads me to suspect the board.
Since this combo is so old I'm at a loss for a...

My X2 5400 is running too hot by
Mac Cool
I upgraded my machine from a Sempron 3000 to an X2 5400 and it's running
too hot, about 55c average, jumps to 62-65 under load. I'm using the stock
heat sink/fan but I still don't think it should get that hot. I have no
case fans.
According to Speedfan my temps under load a
