Using laptop as full time "desktop"? by [email protected]
My computer usage is such that I really do not NEED a laptop. I don't travel for work..... and even tho I'm a student find that dragging a full size laptop to school to be a burden and unnecessary as campus has many desktops setting around to use anyway. Having said that... I can still see value...

IE 6.0--upgrade time by MZB
Question for you folks. I've been sticking with IE 6.0 as that has worked very well. I also use Firefox as a backup (yes, I know many prefer Firefox). I am debating whether to upgrade to IE 8.0. First question: is it ready for prime time? The reason I am considering upgrading is that lately...

Zone Alarm slowed download speed by Paul Schilter
Hi All, A while back I had questions as to why my Dell 8400 couldn't download faster then 2.7 Mb. I tried a whole lot of thinks to fix this. I found the solution. Uninstall Zone Alarm. Now booting the computer in safe mode didn't help, shutting down Zone Alarm didn't help. Uninstalling it and I now...

Vista Problem by Von Fourche
My sister and brother-in-law has a computer with Vista Home Premium. Here's the problem - you know how you can put desk top short cuts on your desk top? Last week Vista would not let them do this. They rebooted, called Indian support, tried again over and over, but no luck - they still...

OT--digital camera selection? by MZB
I currently have a Canon Powershot A75, purchased about 3 years ago. It has 3.2 megapixels. At the time, we thought it would be enough as we RARELY do large photos. However, we now use Picassa software and do a lot of cropping. But it turns out that is just like enlarging pictures so if we crop...

Help with diagnosis by No Name
A few days ago my XPS 600 XP-Pro machine started becoming unresponsive. It would freeze for 30 sec to 10 min, with no mouse movement or window updating. Then a quick update. I had the task manager going, and the only apparent culprit was the "System" process which was running at a stated 20-25%...

Vista prelim system requirements by rob
Does anyone know the "preliminary" system requirements for Vista? I haven't kept up with the hardware guru's of late to see if they had any preliminary info on this. Any idea if Vista will run on a dell 2.3 ghz P4 w/ 768 megs ram decently? I know it's not going to be any speed demon but just...

Firefox Wow! by Pat Conover[_2_]
I finally got sick enough of IE8 to try Firefox and all I can say is WOW! It's like driving a Ferrari compared to a Kia. You folks always recommended it, but I never knew it was that much faster. I use IE8 because a lot of my business sites only use it and I thought I was pretty much stuck...

Cleaning inside of computer by Monica
Don't laugh or groan too loud g 5 year old Dell is going to my daughter. I'd like to take the box outside and use an air compressor to blow out 5 years of cat hair, etc (yes I did clean it during those 5 years). . Is that too much air force? The canned air just doesn't get it all. Monica

Blowing Away the Recovery Partition...Advice? by Daddy[_3_]
I recently received a new Studio XPS 8100. I opted to keep the C: drive pretty much as-is, and uninstalled most of the smell-ware that Dell adds. I'd really like to delete the extra two partitions that contain Dell's diagnostics and the factory image. My first inclination was to simply use the...

Purchase Dell System from Costco? by Key Bored
Hi All: I'm considering buying the Dell Dimension 8400 desktop system. I've checked Dell's website, customized the system in various ways (including purchasing the monitor separately), and arrived at a total price that reflected all of the current "offers". I noticed that the Costco website at...

software rip-off and support headaches by Crsr111
I purchased a laptop and opted to inlcude MS Office 2003 with the purchase. Installed it on the laptop, then bought a desktop and decided I would rather put MS Office on the desktop and run something else on my laptop. So I removed it from the laptop and installed it on the desktop, but MS refused...

Slow Hard Drive on Dell Dim-3000 by John Norman
I recently purchased a Dell Dimension 3000, with XP home,, and I'm experiencing very slow hard drive performance. The drive is a Maxtor 80 gig, Ultra DMA 133, 7200 rpm. It runs slower than an ATA-33. I called Dell support, they had me run some utilities, but to them everything is fine, so they...

What is wrong with my Del? by [email protected]
I spilled up a cofee to my keyboard, so that my "Del" key is sticky. Sometimes it deletes more items than I want to. Any alternative keys? Should I buy Mac instead (if it's spill-proof?)

New Computer/Clean up by Monica
Got my new Dimension 8400 on Thursday. Love it, but hate all the junk Dell installs. I've got two options. Uninstall what I don't want and use a registry cleaner to clean up the leftovers. Safer but probably not as efficient. Or reformat and reinstall XP from one of two sources. My previous...
